I find if I'm snowshoeing, I don't need much real winter stuff. Even at -30, I'm usually in a pair of wool pants with long johns and a wool jacket type thing with a sweater underneath. I usually have a thin pair of wool gloves under a budget pair of leather mitts, the kind with no liner that...
Tamarack looks great! One thing slipped my mind...all of Martin's plans come with the idea that you will be using internal and external stems. I can't remember, been a while, but did he also include a line for a stemless build?
With my new method of building stems from 1/8 inch laminated...
Not sure if I have mentioned it before, but Tamarac is universally despised up here as anything other than firewood, and even then it is approached with caution, as it burns so hot due to its resinous nature. It is well known for its inability to dry in a straight line, and it is very difficult...
Forgot about the Clipper Caribou. My buddy has one and is a big guy and carries big load like me. He also uses the double blade in it and he moves along fine. It's a high capacity canoe, and if I recall, the price wasn't a second mortgage.
I haven't been a serious fly fisher for over 30 years. I'd like to start again, still have all my fly tying stuff.
Nice job on the case, but I have to ask some questions about the rod.
Has there been a shift in the thinking about fly rods, or have i always just been a knuckle head? Back in...
Most long term Canoetripping members know my opinion on the Devil's craft. I'll keep it short so as not to offend to many, but when I see the Dirty Double Blade, I throw Holy Water on it and hope that it melts. Same for the plastic hotdog with a hole in the middle.
I would seriously consider Gamma's suggestion about building a stripper. The one he is currently building is designed exactly for the situations you have described. It's also a solo that can handle bigger people and a load. Last serious trip I did with mine, I was around 230, and carried...
I'm usually not one for over thinking things like this, I usually just forge ahead and d@mn the torpedos.
However, I'm thinking maybe you might get a variation in the depth of your bead doing this. Wider strips will probably all have the same depth, but less wide strips might only have the...
I'm having trouble figuring out your shaper, it almost looks backward or something. However, I think what you are saying is that you are pushing the strip against the outside fence, not the fence next to the router bit. Interesting concept, I've never done it like that. I always just used...
I stopped fiberglassing blades a long time ago. Usually the blades don't fail catastrophically, but in increments. Splits of dings, warning signs that they might be on their way out. I just generally build a new paddle at that point and give the gimp to a pal with an outboard boat who needs a...
Going through some more old documents, found this boat build plan for a boat they apparently used on Long Lake for the log drives. The dimensions are very similar to traditional freighter canoes, just flattened out for building with modern lumber. I've got some contacts I'm going to ask...
At the moment, there are rumours of the Ogoki Road connecting with Armstrong, but we have always been told that it is a forbidden thing, that there will never be a connection. Only a bit of flex in the paddle, jus enough to make it comfortable.
LOL, you are correct, you win a prize of unbelievable value, to be shipped to you at an unknown date, not just because Canada Post is on strike, but because I don't know what the prize is yet.
