    Straps Break?

Ouch. Reminds me of the time long ago when I used Quik & Easy gutter mounts. My wife forgot that I had a whitewater kayak on top and drove into low ceiling parking deck. It broke the rain gutters away where the clamps were attached. You would think the bow lines would sort of give away the...

New cars: are they as impossible as they seem for cartopping?

Actually, on my Outback the lane centering is on by default until you go into settings and turn it off. Then a yellow "warning light" comes on in the dash to let you know it is not turned on. The default setting is "ON" with no indicator light. It would be nice if the dealer to let one know...

    If I’m hauling there’s weather.

For me the stern tiedown is not much of a nuisance; I have to take my canoe off anyway or the tailgate will hit it at about 1/4 of the way up. The lip over the rear window shows the results if the canoe is left up there when opening the back. Thank goodness for touch up paint. Fully agree...

New cars: are they as impossible as they seem for cartopping?

I am not sure. As I was in this vehicle for the first time, there was quite a bit of difference in the cockpit to absorb compared to the 2002 Sequoia that I was used to. Fortunately I quickly learned how to disable this feature along with others; I just wish that the dealership had told me it...

New cars: are they as impossible as they seem for cartopping?

I know how you feel. When my 2002 Toyota Sequoia passed on to the "Great Junkyard in the Sky", I was rudely thrust into the modern world of Electronic Curses, er, Cars. I like to direct my car, not have it direct me. Upon picking up my brand new 2022 Outback, I got on the interstate to come...

New cars: are they as impossible as they seem for cartopping?

Very true. That is why I wait until I am stopped or let my passenger do the changing. The same goes with the touch screen in my car. I realized that when using the touchscreen, the driver's eyes are off the road for quite a distance at driving speed. It is scary out there when you start...

    Food Staple Trail Cooking

If you have any farm markets and orchards around you can often get grade "B" or #2 fruits and veggies that are not perfect in looks or size (so not saleable in corporate supermarkets) but taste no different. I picked up bushel of Honeycrisp #2 apples at an orchard last fall for $8.00 and...

New cars: are they as impossible as they seem for cartopping?

There are still folks who live the "old school" lifestyle and do not carry a cell or smartphone. For the audiophile, CD also has a greater frequency range than what is available in digital download formats. Do not be a distracted driver and text or use a cellphone while driving. People die...

New cars: are they as impossible as they seem for cartopping?

My 1953 Jeep had that system also. Another vehicle long gone... We bought a 2022 Subaru outback with the same giant key fob system that you have. I too have sworn many, many times at the fob (which is usually back in the house since it takes up too much pocket space) and at designers of the...

Vanishing Trails, David and Lea Jackson

Laying in bed for the fourth day resting a wrenched back, this was good medicine for the soul. Living in a part of the world where one is seldom out of sight or hearing of civilization it is good to see, if only vicariously, the type of world that has been rarely touched by the human hand...

The Floating Method for Protecting Food from Bears (???)

I would not leave my canoe out in a lake overnight, but I wondered about stashing my food in a bear vault, putting the vault in a sealed drysack and floating it well offshore with an anchor to hold it in place. But it would make the trip to get a late night munchie a "bear"!

What are your current solo canoes and how do you like them?

Problem? What problem? Beautiful canoe, no problem there!

    A perfect paddling day - I didn’t go

Good decisions are the precursors to good fortunes. My rule of thumb is the old "Have at least as many boats as the highest class of rapids on the river", and I would add at least another class to the rapids for a healing post-surgery shoulder. Good decision.

    My First Paddle

Thanks Al, it turned out way better than I had expected for my first paddle. I am pretty happy with the way my Ottertail paddle handles in the lake. I finally got it out this weekend and I liked the control that the long thin blade gives. I may have made the shaft an inch or so to short, but...

Conemaugh River Lake- Flood Stage (daytrip)

Fascinating! When I saw "Flood Stage" my mind immediately went to whitewater, the only flood stage paddling that I have done. The thought of "flood stage' without fast current is new to me; geography can influence expectations! I thoroughly enjoyed the photos; it sounds and looks like a...

    My New Northstar Phoenix

Thank Woodpuppy. I wanted to give the Phoenix a try with the kneeling drops first because that was how the one I paddled at the WPSCR had been set up and I can still kneel comfortably for a pretty long stretch. Even sitting with the seat in the kneeling position doesn't cause it to be too...

    My First Paddle

Thanks all! I have not dipped the new paddle into water yet; it seems like I've got too many irons in the fire to get anything finished. I did get it oiled with eight applications of oil, but had to give it a heavy sanding after the third coat; I let it sit to long as I became absorbed in...

Pat Moore new old stock canoes

I wish that I could be at the WPSCR again this year to see these canoes, especially the Dandy, but other duties call. This is a wonderful find that you have made and have worked on to restore these hulls to completion . Congratulations!

    Float bag recommendation

For size, I guess it also depends on how much volume of the canoe you want to fill and how much open space you want for gear. The more volume you fill with air instead of water, the less kinetic energy the capsized canoe has as it moves downstream. K.E.=1/2 M x (V squared) My Outrage (12'...
