    Straighten Sawyer Paddle Blade

You are right they are glassed and quite heavily too. The tip of that particular paddle is wore down into the wood so if steam were even an option it could get in through the tip of the blade if there were even a way to do that? Probably do more harm than good I would imagine.

    Straighten Sawyer Paddle Blade

Picked up a pair of these old Sawyers yesterday. Super excited being they are vintage and in really nice shape aside from the slight hook in the blade of the 54". Ultimately wondering about the design having the lamination butt-joints perpendicular to the shaft. I have inspected them closely and...

    Refurbishing Old Cane Seats?

Hey Mike, I just now came across this post which somehow missed when searching the site earlier for "cane". Still a bit befuddled with the mechanics of the site so have sent a couple questions to the webmaster. Anyway, hopefully attached here is a link to my recent post on re-caning. I found it...

    Free Boat Rehab

Continually amazed at the number of different canoe manufacturers there were/are. Kind of like coming across some oddball snowmobile one's never heard of before at the local car show. Thanks for sharing!

    Re-Cane MR Sunrunner Seats

For those of you contemplating tackling this, here was my process & takeaways. Would definitely do this again as found it to be not terribly difficult & definitely rewarding. :) PROCEDURE IN BRIEF Watch this video (not mine)...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rDbkIZo6uBM&t=2s Order materials...

Mad River Gelcoat (gel coat) Repair/Questions

Looks like I've got more homework to do. May have mentioned this in an earlier post but a lifetime ago I worked (one summer) at a fiberglass canoe manufacturer in Bemidji MN called Core Craft. Bad news is I never got a chance to work on the canoes as was hired to buff/polish the fiberglass...

Mad River Gelcoat (gel coat) Repair/Questions

Gellcoat repair just seems difficult without more practice and right now I am perplexed not knowing the ultimate purpose of this boat. The hope is to come across another canoe that may serve my tripping purposes a bit better (hopefully something lighter and more beat-up) and keep this one as...

Mad River Gelcoat (gel coat) Repair/Questions

Sorry everyone but my Gmail did not flag me (as it had in the past) that I had any responses. I will go through them tomorrow and reply shortly there after. THANKS!

    Shop Rant, missing tool

Definitely can relate to misplacing stuff but tools generally are not my problem being quite OCD with organizing the workshop. Billfold and keys are an entirely different story. A number of years ago I purchased a nice tool bag for my son and have been stocking it with this-&-that as I either...

    Movable work platforms

A creative, resourceful, tinkerer after my own heart. Often times I find myself spending more time organizing & creating efficiencies within the shop than actually working on the projects they are intended for. Not quite certain what that means???

Mad River Gelcoat (gel coat) Repair/Questions

Clarification...Some of the photos show just black rub marks which have already been removed so don't need any help on that front.

Mad River Gelcoat (gel coat) Repair/Questions

If all went well in constructing this post, along with the attached photos there should also be a link to a prior conversation on this old MR Sunrunner. In case anyone is interested. Along with re-caning the seats, I am contemplating a bit of repair to the hull exterior as I go over it removing...

    Canoe Work Rack/Sling Thing

I see your point on visibility. Having go-to tools stuck away in black boxes is less than efficient. 3/8" thermal-shaped acrylic for the next revision?? Kidding. Love the suggestion on ropes & notches. With the rest of this project taking shape the 2x4 uprights are looking marginal at best. Come...

    Canoe Work Rack/Sling Thing

In looking at the Sling Thing early this morning the hidden function of the repurposed box bases became shockingly apparent. Kind of like when the sternman catches a wave tip with a tired forward stroke and showers cold water on your sunburned back. Serendipitously, the boxes are in fact...wait...

Hello From Already Frozen Central MN

Thanks so much Jim! Recognized your name from a prior topic so had to look back at put the pieces together. As for the suggestion on building a boat myself...I know my limitations in that patience is not my strong suit. An endeavor like that may not be the best fit. Baby steps for me right now...

Hello From Already Frozen Central MN

Great site & wonderful people willing to share and help. Thanksomuch. In short I'm currently in an obsessive mode with canoe tripping still riding high from a 9-day with my 17 yr old this past August. Plan to continue utilizing this forum for technical input on boats and hopefully share anything...

    Photo of the day

Definitely Duluth. Back then it was the only pack any of us were aware of and pretty much all we saw. Beautiful, solid packs that last forever. Use em till the leather cinches are stretched out enough to convolve the entire bag. Well...maybe that is an embellishment. When they come up for sale...

    Video: Backwater

My balance has always been horrible so bumble around quite a bit. Have a great video of my brother (blessed w/balance & more practice) where he magically steps from invisible slippery rock to invisible slippery rock into the water & effortlessly unloads the boat. Burdened with the food pack as...

    Photo of the day

This photo is of my brother taken somewhere in Ontario's Turtle River Provincial Park. I remember waking up that morning finding moose tracks in far too close proximity to the tent however we both slept sound through night #1 having half a jag from sharing a pint of something most likely cheap...
