Tired of restrictive headnets, try this

Sometimes you just gotta kick yourself when you see a million dollar idea like this and wonder why you didn't think of it first. Alan

I am also highly unlikely to download any files posted on an internet forum. Perhaps you can copy and paste the text from your trip report and post it in full here. Alan

    An extra trippy Merlin.

It looks like some of the strips are visible through the coloring. How well did it cover overall? I know I struggled with that when I tried to color a hull. Alan

    An extra trippy Merlin.

I don't know that I'd go so far as to say it looks great but I really like it none the less. How rough was the wood surface after getting it wet with unicorn shpit and water? I assume you weren't able to sand the raised grain without the risk of losing color? Did the cloth still lay down ok...

    Repairing ZRE Carbon Paddle Blades

All the power surge paddles I've ever seen say power surge on the sticker. If that was my paddle I'd just add some cloth after sanding away some of the edge to remove the jaggies. Depending how deep the jagged bits are you might be able to just get away with sanding the tip smooth. I've done...

    Repairing ZRE Carbon Paddle Blades

I have as well. I've had a couple ZRE paddles where the grip came apart nicely using a heat gun and I had one where I got it super hot and I still expected something to break before it finally came loose. Alan

Best Sleeping Pad for Side Sleepers and Comfort on the Trail?

I use a Thermarest pad. I don't know if the exact model is still available but it's one of the lightweight and expensive designs. I've been very happy with it. It's very light and compact yet I find it very comfortable. I started with a 20" and upgraded later to a 25" which I like a lot more...

    Repairing ZRE Carbon Paddle Blades

Very nicely done. Better than I've done patching my Zavs. My failures have come from tip wear due to hard paddling up and down shallow gravel bars when training. After a certain amount of wear the tip delaminates. I've wrapped the tips with a couple layers of dynel and that's worn much better...

Pelican seeks protection under Canadian bankruptcy law as it restructures

I was really interested to read what exactly was going on until I realized you were talking about the boat company and not the bird. Alan

What's the oldest lake in the world?

I'm sure there is an explanation but I would assume that any lake that's been around for 25 million years would have filled in quite a bit because of sediment. Is there no river inflow to the lake? Did it used to be 2 miles deep? Alan

Thoughts on Grasse River/GRB Newman Classic?

They must not have sold very many of those. A friend of mine bought one used quite a few years ago. I remember researching it at the time and found virtually nothing. I paddled it a bit and enjoyed it (I'm 165). I did not find it tippy but I was racing at that time and "tippy" is relative. It...

    What are you reading?

I thought it was great. I'd never heard of it before so I had no childhood experience. I found it very enjoyable and it was fun to watch him weave the story together. And now the rabbits on my evening walks are much more interesting than they were before. Alan

    An extra trippy Merlin.

It's getting close! Can't wait to see some fiberglass on it. I do the same with tape on the gaps to try and prevent resin running through the hull. On the last few builds I've used thickened epoxy as a seal coat on the entire hull before fiberglassing. I really like this. It doesn't take much...

    What are you reading?

Unfortunately the rabbits were typical newbies. They did not understand how current interacts with the hull and were unable to control the direction of the canoe with it often turning and spinning out of their control. In the end they pinned against an obstruction and were forced to wet exit. Alan

    First paddle of 2025

I'm cheating a little but this just popped up on my Facebook memories. First paddle of the year in 2015. Alan

    What are you reading?

Currently reading Watership Down. The rabbits are planning to escape in a canoe (punt) tonight. I'm excited to find out what happens and hear their impressions on how it handles and what they think of the layup. They're newbies so I hope it has good primary stability. Alan

    Canoecopia 2025

I tend to agree with this. When you look at the track record of Kevlar over the decades there isn't much to take issue with. Alan

PFDs: Class 3 or 5 PFD for Whitewater?

Excellent research and information. Thanks for posting this! I'll be curious how you feel about the fit and performance after some real world paddling. I'm also curious how the extra flotation feels when in the water? I've often thought more flotation might make deep water re-entry easier.

    easy to cook dinner options

Oatmeal for breakfast. Bannock with peanut butter for lunch. Quinoa, lentils, and dehydrated veggies with salt and olive oil for dinner. They're all super simple and quick. Alan
