Thanks! Lots of places to look up. I'd thought about taking the bike (and still might) but it's hard to do 12 hrs a day (no windshield) and, of course, rain the day of the wedding would be a real bummer.
I was thinking that I'd likely mix hiking in with paddling but now I'm not sure... sounds...
Thanks Mason. I hadn't even thought about places like Yellowstone. I guess I've always thought of it for its geysers which was our main focus when we visited during High School. Logic would suggest that it's so much more but 1st impressions, ya know? I'll also look into Leigh Lake.
I'm sure...
My Wabakimi plans for this summer might be delayed until 2026 as my niece recently announced that she's getting married in Lake Stevens, Washington Sept 6th. I can't really afford to do both (and I doubt I'd be back to the truck in time any way if I launch Aug 18th as planned) so I'm debating...
Might be worth contacting them and see if anyone has a loaner boat. Worst they can say is "did you (already) hit your freakin' head?" (or something similar)
I never wash cars or boats either (ok, sometimes I rinse out the mud before portaging).
Don't get me wrong, Gumpus' look great all spiffed up but I, personally, don't care nearly enough about cosmetics to spend any time on them.
I'll admit to some bias as I seek out lesser known places and document the experiences on my website (as well as posting the canoe trips here). I do it, in part, hoping that others may find the information useful and plan trips of their own. True, that might lead to over-use of an area but it...
ah... but so are "Gentile" and "colleague" not to mention "Dubois" (a town in PA pronounced DO-boyce) or North Versailles (a suburb of Pittsburgh where people might wet themselves laughing if you pronounce it as something other than "Ver-sails".
Actually, a lot of towns in Western PA with...
I'd agree with Boatman. Sand it, watch for any place(s) where you get into or though the cloth (you'll notice- it'll get "fuzzy" even if it doesn't go through), repair those areas with epoxy & glass. 4 oz is sufficient; s-glass has better abrasion resistance than e-glass but I doubt that...
cheater 😁
Seriously though, I would have to agree with Chip. Looking at the same scenery every day would have to be the hardest part... especially solo. Not something I'll be doing for sure but certainly interesting.
My experience has varied. Typically, I don't get on the water very fast, as morning is my favorite part of the day. Whether camping or at home, I'm often up at first light and enjoy watching the world around me come to life. The unhurried pace of the mornings also lends itself well to making...
I carry both. Since the beginning, I've been toting a Silky folding saw and a gränsfors bruks small forest axe. (The axe is sharp so, as always on trips, I'm careful.) For this summer's trip, I've been considering upgrading the saw to a 650mm Katana Boy but I might be better off to carry...
I seriously doubt that the truck will match this canoe but I am currently looking for a replacement. The rusty, trusty Ranger broke the crankshaft, I looked the truck over carefully and decided that the frame is too soft to justify dropping in another engine. A little over 338,000 miles and...
I fished some more Cherry out of the barn for gunwales, trim, more paddles, whatever and then stopped by the shop & flipped the canoe.
The tape & sawdust seem to have done a very good job of keeping the spit from seeping through and I am extremely pleased that there were very few areas inside...
Interesting... I was primarily concerned with the ability of the epoxy to penetrate through the spit and attach firmly to the wood (which it seems to have done). I'll probably be over tomorrow evening. Maybe I'll see if I can rip the glass off the test panel with pliers.
If it's tearing the...
