I really need to hit a Canadian Tire next trip North. I've been to Timmy's & discovered the awesome fritters of Voyageur's General Store... seems like I should get the full experience.
OK, wait... Sorry Glenn but, at the risk of (further?) derailing this thread...
140° F is straight "hot" from the water heater. Now, I paddle strippers & wouldn't hesitate to hose them down with hot tap water (if I ever washed them) but could that temperature damage some hull materials?
I...
Preach on. I'm not a lake jumper as my time on the water is severely limited (so boats are dry before launching again) but I can't think anyone would want to spread invasives. I suppose that we could research protocols but it might be easier to just have them repeatedly hammered into our thick...
That's actually one of the reasons that I started building strippers.
My re-entry to canoe tripping was with an 80s-era Sawyer and I hated beating up a vintage boat that was no longer made. Now that I build my own, I can mistreat them with impunity... "I built it so it's nothing special and...
I think I'd worry a lot more about "UL approved" in my kitchen toaster or crock pot (something that stays plugged in when I'm away from home) than a camp stove (which I'm likely to be crouched over as I eagerly await supper).
I usually carry 2 stoves, a pocket rocket and an Amazon cheapie...
Stick around, we'll have you dragging boats across portage trails & bashing into rocks in no time.
Seriously, there's nothing wrong with keeping things in nice shape but, yes, scratches and repairs are all part of the games that we play. The extent to which we repair those scratches varies...
I'd clamp something (like a wooden furring strip?) to the hull at your desired locations and see how it behaves. If the flex / support seems reasonable, drill some holes and add the thwart(s). I'm sure there is an art (and, probably a science) to thwart placement but I'm a "trial & error" guy...
Because the seats are hung from the gunwales, I doubt that they lend much structural support to the hull.
As Benson points out, removing them to test (and reinstalling if needed) is easy enough... Go for it!
Sure looks better than my first... Very nice! I'm in the "don't sweat the sanding scratches" camp because you'll scratch the heck out of it when using it and I guarantee everybody will rave about how nice it looks and no one will mention the scratches (even the real ones that you put in from...
As one of those who's been able to do a couple of those weeks-long trips as well as many local day paddles, I'm glad that you took the time to share the TR. I find the trade-off between solitude and ease of logistics to be acceptable and local stuff shouldn't be overlooked.
The Potomac is on...
I too was a bit worried about weather / water levels leading up to your trip. I'm really glad that it worked out for you guys and thanks for the TR; I really enjoyed reading it.
Pretty smart little lizard. Shake the vending machine and see if something tasty falls out. Unfortunately for him, that discovery is very likely to cost him dearly.
@mitscan1, I don't know where you live but, if it's within driving distance of Butler, PA, the WPASCR is happening next weekend and it is geared toward solo canoes with many collectors and other aficionados in attendance.
PS: welcome.
Interesting... so Alan's a wrasslin' fan... (or, at least, familiar with the terminology)
Most of the Army Corps campsites around here have been closed over the years but not due to vandalism. The money generated from the camping fees & launch fees was less then the cost to collect the funds...
The seat is overly wide as an experiment or sorts. I'm figuring that, as I slide to the rails, the boat will automatically heel. I probably don't lean the hull enough on turns so the seat may force me to. 🤷♂️
If I were to build a seat for you, I could put one of the spreaders in the...
Hmm... interesting but not much room for the tent & food barrel in one of those. I did notice that none of them are using a bent shaft... No animal tails either.
Honestly, I enjoy watching the sprinters but it looks too much like work to me.
