    Silent Entry

On calm waters, I have often used an old wooden ping pong paddle to skull with. I have a short piece of cord attached from the end of the handle up to my seat frame. I just make small skulling strokes and then let the paddle go without ever lifting it from the water. Silent, but effective. It's...

    A Magic Trip

An 8 day solo sounds like a great way to christen a new boat. But I have one question. Regarding that third picture, how long did it take you to train the pup to watch your line for you? He/she looks like a great travel companion.

    Breathable waist high waders

I have used hip waders for years to hunt. But mostly out of boats that didn't have a chance of an involuntary dismount, and then only going into water depths that I could stand up in without overtopping. When using full chest waders, I always wear a wading belt. And then I really, really, try...

    converting to a Y stern

I have not done a conversion to a Y stern, so cannot give an opinion. But as to the difference between a side mount, and mounting an outboard to the centerline, I can. Ran a side mount for several years, with only one involuntary dismount. Finally got a chance to buy a square stern, and haven't...

New tires on the canoe trailer

Smart decision Robin. I have upgraded rim size over the years on all my trailers, and have no regrets. Not only do you get a little more ground clearance, but the wheel bearings turn slower, and heat dissipates better with slower rotating assemblies, both hubs and tires. And a slightly higher...

Hello from Dougoutcanoe, in England, UK.

Welcome from Louisiana, Brave lot to paddle the Thames. My favorite canals have to be the Upper Peak Forest, with the Oxford coming in second. Averaging 20 a day on canals was a serious hustle. Those kids will have bragging rights from that trip for the rest of their lives. Bet you were some...

Seat and thwarts in a solo canoe

To Mike McCrea, Just wanted to say how much I have learned from your rigging posts on this fine forum. While enjoying all the other's posts regarding tripping, canoe design, and canoe building, and camping, etc., I have always enjoyed seeing how how your years of experience have exposed...

Jokes and Laughter for the Day

My wife yelled from upstairs and asked, "Do you ever get a shooting pain across your body, like someone's got a voodoo doll of you and they're stabbing it?" Sounding concerned, I replied, "No..." She responded, "How about now?"

They said a mask and gloves were enough to go to the grocery store. They lied, everybody else had clothes on

    The Fund Raiser is Done!

Thank you Doug. I just wish that my small annual contribution, could financially match the level of enjoyment and knowledge that I receive from this great site. The wealth of knowledge and experience gathered within this group never disappoints. I seldom have anything of value to post, but am...

    Video, into the Solitude

Thanks for posting this Jim. We were both lounging today, post Christmas downtime, and that was perfect video to throw up on the big tv. I sort of liked the look of it being shot on film, and occasionally hearing the gear sounds from the camera. Even the trailers at the end were entertaining.

Canoes and Canots in New France

Thanks Odyssey Interesting read. Bateaux and pirogues are still common terms used here. Lots of French influence. Geaux Tigers:cool:

I joined the Square Stern Mafia

Congratulations Robin. Beautiful rig, and being "like new", it should serve you well for making lots of new memories. While I love paddling a traditional canoe, my 16' square stern canoe, from 1982, has slowly over the years, become my favorite choice to take. It felt like cheating back when I...

What do you drink on a trip?

Black coffee in am. And have more than once stayed in camp, rather than moving on, just because of the enjoyment of a good chair, a great coffee, and a need to slow down. Another pot of coffee? Why yes, this is a great spot for slowing down and shaking off the world left behind. Usually have a...
