Dumb Idea? Drift Sock for Downstream Propulsion?

Maybe you could deploy the sock behind you and use it to slow you down; think of it as compression braking for a canoe with an over-enthusiastic paddler. This idea might also be good as a training aid for an additional workout leading up to marathon season.

    Dressed Out Northstar Phoenix

The factory kneeling drops are well set for me, but I am over 6' and have 35" inseams. My biggest issue is getting my size 12 shoes under the seat! I had to learn the proper technique, so it is easy now. I can also sit quite comfortably with the factory kneeling drops but I do not think that...

    Where Are All The Canoes?

I started this thread after a cross country trip across the southern tier of the United States, South Carolina to California, and now have just returned from a two week trip to Maine. I can say that I noticed a higher percentage of cars with canoes in the north-east than on the trip out west...

Bent vs. Straight Shaft Paddles—A Jacobson vs. Callan Debate

I sometimes use a wood straight shaft, sometimes a carbon bent shaft and often a carbon DOUBLE-BENT shaft. Now that should muddy the waters!

    Hookaroon

That is an interesting tool. A combination hook, spatula and bent shaft paddle! This is the type Hookaroon that I am used to seeing. It is a handy tool when working with downed logs.

    A Molded Plywood Canoe

With a background in furniture design and engineering, I have always loved woodworking and things made of wood. I had wondered about the possibility of a veneer lay-up (i.e.. plywood) canoe for a while before finding out that they had actually been made. According to my info, the the technique...

    A Molded Plywood Canoe

I posted this on the WCHA website earlier this week, but thought that I would post it here too. I am interested in the background of these veneer constructed canoes, so if anyone has any knowledge about them or the Allied Aviation Corporation. I picked up an interesting old canoe last week...

The Tangerine Dream arrived early! (New Hemlock SRT)

Such a beautiful SRT; I'm sorry for your loss. At least you are still around to replace the canoe! I have been pinned a few times in decked boats (C1 and kayaks, somehow I've managed to avoid that in open canoes so far) and fortunately never fully wrapped a boat, but reflections on the...

    paddling politics?

Good on ya, Taylor! Getting out from behind your desk and actually meeting with the people that elected you to represent them and learning of their problems first hand is something that US politicians should do but rarely seem to. I wonder how many of our belt-way bound politicos could even...

    Tilley Hats

You mean you're supposed to CLEAN your Tilley? I always just fished mine out of the lake. I forgot to post it, but I found a Canadian made Tilley AirFlo hat last year. Happy again!

Waterproof case that holds phone and wallet?

I use a small dry bag. The ends loop easily over a thwart and lock so if there is a spill the items are secured to the canoe. The photos do not show it well, but if you look closely you can see the dry bag attached in front of the paddler's position (green in one case, yellow in the other).

    Paddle leashes

When paddling whitewater in C1s and OC1s, I always carry a spare paddle on or under my float bags. In the kayaks I didn't carry a spare paddle but I could generally count on one of my paddling buddies to go after the paddle if it was loose. I grabbed paddles (or the 'yak) for them when they...

Old school vs. new school canoe design.

Although the big canoe producers market nationally, I think most canoes are designed with local conditions in mind. Consider the areas where Wenonah and Old Town canoes are made. Minnesota is known for it's big water and relatively flat terrain. Maine is known for it's mountains and wilder...

Help me upgrade from my current solo: Wenonah Vagabond

Congratulations on the new canoe! For an "All-Rounder" type canoe, I think you picked a good one with the Trillium. That BlackLite is so light you gotta love it. Back last Fall I ordered a Phoenix in BlackLite as my "All-Rounder". I love the maneuverability of the Phoenix, but I am used to...

    Water Flow Data Interpretation

Right now the American Whitewater site is showing the Little Miami River as "Low Runnable", with the East Fork and the Clifton Gorge (Section 1) below recommended levels.

    Charlie Wilson’s compare sheet

Thanks for posting the word docs. I am slowly working on a spreadsheet "Canoe and Specs" compilation for modern (composite and plastic) canoes using info that I run across on the web. This group of Charlie's lists several that I have been unable to find the specs on. Thank you again. Once...

    Water Flow Data Interpretation

If the river has any whitewater, even upstream, you may find a good source of info in the AMERICAN WHITEWATER website in the river info section. It is broken down by state with the rivers color designated in Low, Running and High depending on the flow, which is updated regularly. You can also...

    Tropical Storm Beryl

Beryl missed us down in my part of the South, and we could have used the rain. Did anyone get in any whitewater "hurricane runs" on those small flashy creeks that can only be run after a big rain?
