Ontario Crown Land non-resident camping permits

recped - see my post above from Weds. The guy I know from Minnesota was on a Wabakimi Project trip with 3 Canadians on crown lands west of the park. They were in their campsite when a yellow MNR Beaver aircraft passed over. The pilot, who was NMR law enforcement, landed on the lake and called...

Ontario Crown Land non-resident camping permits

I got a non-resident Ontario Crown Land permit last year and remember it took a bit of searching to find the appropriate site. On this trip 3 of us were from the states and the other 3 were Canadian residents and thus did not need Crown Land permits. It is important to have a permit if you are...

Info on Chivelston, Harris & Harold Lakes outside Wabakimi?

Reaped is correct. In the Wabakimi Project we learned to look for old portages by landing at likely locations and going into the bush and start walking back and forth looking for old blazes and trail tread. Portage openings on the shoreline would fill in quickly because they got sufficient light...

Does anyone have a canoe set up with a rowing rig ?

I remember a friend who had several of the older model of Grumman Sport boats which were kind of a hybrid of canoe and row boat. They came with oar locks and it was fun to row them - a bit sluggish to get going but they would move out nicely once you got them going.

    National Boy Scouts Day

When I think back to my days when active in scouting from the late 1950’s through summer 1964, I recall finding many of the merit badge requirements fairly easy to meet, more a matter of showing up and doing the requirements rather than demonstrating mastery. Some such as Lifesaving were fairy...

    Take the Flatulence Quiz

Me, 4/5. So I guess I know something about the topic. Now I am sure the missus wishes I would do something about it.

    National Boy Scouts Day

I got my start canoeing while in the scouts. I enjoyed summer camp so much that I starting working on the camp staff in 1963, after 4 summers as a camper. That first summer on staff I was paid $5/week as I recall. I really enjoyed scouts from Cub Scouts to the local Sea Scout ship...

    Training?

My routine year round is swimming laps about 3 x wkly for 1/2 mile, walking 1-2 miles 3-4 x wkly, and a 1 x wkly older person yoga class that is mostly easy stretching. Starting March every year I go to the local nature center and start carrying a 60# royalex canoe. I work up to a 1/3 mile...

    A Tale of Two Trippers

I sure liked my Tripper purchased new direct from OT in the spring of 1983 using a relatives SC Johnson employee discount. As I recall I paid $600 and I got the $75.00 shipping cost refunded due slight shipping damage from the trucking company. Shortly after I got the boat a buddy and I ran it...

Weather: Was it colder when you were a kid?

When I consider the question, I think back to my youth growing up a couple blocks off Lake Michigan in SE Wisconsin. I spent every summer day at the beach and my recall is that the warmest the lake got to be was generally in the 60’s. Many days I came home with a tight chest and blue lips from...

    Wabakimi is the Plan

Try contacting Clem Quenville, a local First Nations guy in Armstrong who is a good contact for road shuttles and secure vehicle storage. I have been told he also allows his customers to camp overnight on his property before/after trips. He is very reliable and reasonably priced. He is also the...

    Wabakimi is the Plan

BF - other than some of the most popular routes (Kopka Rv; north on the Allenwater Rv from Allanwater Bridge off the railroad) there is no competition the campsites because there are few to no other parties. A number of years ago we met an older, overweight woman paddling solo. She and her...

    Wabakimi is the Plan

BF - you can get permits from any outfitter in the area or buy them online from Ontario Parks. In the park you will need a provincial park permit and on surrounding Crown Lands you need a Crown Land Camping permit. No need to get your permits early, the park and surrounding Crown Lands don’t get...

Weather 1/25: Cold, Cold, Cold, Wind, Wind, Wind, Wind

And I was feeling a little sorry for myself that at age 77 I still have to spend my winters in southern Wisconsin dealing with 4” snowfalls while friends and family members snowbird the winter in the south.

    Judging a person on appearance

I remember similar reactions from California guys I encountered in the service while stationed on the west coast. While they came across as friendly, hip and cool they were often a bit condescending when they found out I was from Wisconsin. California was obviously the cool place to be from.

From what you’ve shown us with your paddles, I am sure your craftsmanship will be fine. When you attend the dinner make sure to wear your dress flannel shirt.

Double blade paddle . . . worth it?

When the safe padding advocates taught me that alcohol and water don’t mix, I decided to stick to beer and red wine while underway and save the whisky and water for the campsite.
