    Steam box ideal length

It was a major repair job. It was a custom built boat (not by me) and at slipped its mooring and went onto a breakwater and then just chaffed itself for days till the owner came and rescued it. All better. Jim

    Steam box ideal length

I’ll say it again, use a wallpaper steamer. It costs about $50, runs on electricity (so no fire) and it boils water in minutes. As to the box it needs to be just a bit bigger, longer than the wood you want to steam. Anything more is just wasting steam trying to fill up the box. I built a box one...

    Multi Tools

I used to have the Wave model but it was stolen from my car along with some other tools. I would have bought another but I ended up with the Sidekick because I found it in the parking lot. There are so many different models from different companies it is hard to chose. Jim

    Multi Tools

I have a Leatherman Sidekick that I left home so I could try the Sog Powerpint. It is smaller and lighter and handled the necessary jobs when cooking (grabbing pots and lids, etc) but beyond that it wasn’t needed. I like the Sog and it will be with me often. Not totally thrilled with some of the...

It was only a little less comfortable and it gave him a little bit more room to get his feet under to kneel. The second year since I knew what he does we went to the...

    Best varnish for ash paddle

I’m partial to Interlux Schooner #96 I’ve used it for decades. The only down side is you need to buy Interlux special thinner to clean the brush if you don’t use a disposable one. Jim

Fairing or beveling the mold stations of a strip build Kite canoe?

I always place the forms forward or and aft (appropriately) of the specified distance so beveling is needed but it gives more support to the planks and more surface area to staple. That is the standard boat building practice. Jim

    Peak Refuel Freeze Dried meals

I like stroopwaffles, had them on my last trip. There is a new dehydrated food company based in Maine called ‘Good to Go’ but I haven’t tried them yet. Generally I don’t bring dehydrated meals but a couple times I’ve thought about it. Jim
