Kevin Callan: Death of the Campfire

I would add to that the subdivision another one separating those for which fire is a "common" thing (currently or in the past) vs those that might go on one short "outdoor adventure" per year, live in a city where open fires just don't happen and only a small percentage have actual wood burning...

    Photo of the day

I've been trying to trap a porcupine which is slowly eating my cabin but all I've got so far is squirrels (black or grey around here). Fortunately he/she only eats plywood which I am gradually covering up with pressure treated lumber or steel mesh that he/she only takes small samples...

Dumb Idea? Drift Sock for Downstream Propulsion?

You can easily have an eddy in the middle of the river if there is a big bump in the river bottom that would send the current sideways

Kevin Callan: Death of the Campfire

When I'm solo I rarely have fires, most of time except for early or late season ( a variable depending on latitude) there are too many bugs to make it enjoyable and as I am usually using a large bug shelter (floorless) or a 4 person tent so I can use a stove under cover. Cooking is basically...

    Save the Moose Campaign 2024

Your video needs to be hosted somewhere, then click on the Media button (above next to the quote) and you get this page (which lists the acceptable hosts). Imgur is on the list so I don't know why it's not working for you. YouTube definitely works.

    Review of Rhéaume 16' Explorer

If I recall correctly, Rhéaume bought out the leftovers of Mid-Canada Fibreglass (Scott, Bluewater, Impex Kayaks) plus private label work for various brands and that is how they got into the composite market. Prior to that acquisition they were strictly a niche w/c builder.

    Writer Looking for Canoe Info/Stories

I would suggest you look at the Trip Report forums on this site and also at https://www.myccr.com (Canadian site), besides the reports posted on these sites you will also find links to reports that are posted on paddlers own sites.

Reversing long running threads so newest posts are visible?

I use some forums where that sort option is available but most do not. The auto "go to last read post" works reasonably well but does not seem to work on older threads. The simple way to deal with that is to select the last page and them scroll down to find the most recent posts.

Satellite Communicator (Garmin In Reach Mini II) questions.

As far as the delay on your message, I subscribe to the Gamin Service Incident reports, they are very frequent. most are related to activation's and subscriptions but they also report delayed messages on a regular basis. These delays are usually fairly short (1 or 2 hours max) so that could be...

Satellite Communicator (Garmin In Reach Mini II) questions.

This is the problem with the Mini versions, for full functionality they need to be paired with a smartphone. I have an old Delorme InReach (no mapping), it's doesn't have as good of an antenna so connecting can be slow and it doesn't work well (slow) under heavy cover. I travel with people who...

Canadian HWY 389 and 510 to the East

I've been to Labrador City 4 times (or 5?), the furthest I've been on Hwy 510 is Churchill Falls. Hwy 389 I a great drive.....for the SCENERY! The road itself is rough, not as bad as it was 20 years ago when I made my first trip. There is construction is some areas, all part of 500 Million...

Wherever the stern is showing some wear is the place the skid should go. It would be helpful if you posted some pics showing the wear.

What is your least favorite portage?

Yeah 100 rods is an acceptable length, that is "acceptable" not necessarily enjoyable. Of course I've had to do much longer. One portage that sticks in my mind is the "Two Pants Portage" around Ringham's Gorge on the Pukaskwa River (north side of Lake Superior).

Wollaston or Black Lake to Kasba Lake

At the very top of my bucket list (been in that position for 15 years) is a trip from Wollaston Lake to Baker Lake via Kasba Lake and the Kazan River. I made a preliminary map of the route here: https://caltopo.com/m/VDHC The map shows all the "portages" from Wollaston to Kasba, the part...

Night Fears: Worse with Hammocks than Tents?

The only time I recall a real "night fear" was not in a hammock, On the last night of a trip I decided to just use my bivy instead of putting up the tent. The only real purpose of the bivy was because I was camped very close to a significant rapid and thus the area as a lot of moisture in the...

    Need More Dad Lore

My top two and they have been there for a long time Wollaston Lake (Northern Sask) to Kasba Lake to Baker Lake via the Kazan River, 7 plus weeks Shefferville to Kuujjuaq (Northern Quebec) on the Swampy Bay River (4 weeks) For both I'm a bit hesitant to go solo, that hesitancy increases the...
