    Green river trip in Utah

You will have plenty of time for hiking and exploring for cliff dwellings, pictographs and ruins. I would recommend Belknap’s waterproof Canyonlands River Guide. It has very detailed mile by mile river maps which show the locations of some of these features and the side canyons. We had...

    Green river trip in Utah

Sadly, ppine is correct about the tamarisk invasion. I paddled that section (120 miles between Green River, UT and the confluence) 4 years ago and was really surprised at the difficulty we had finding usable campsites in Stillwater Canyon due to the overgrowth and in some places the mud. We...

Poll: What is Your Opinion of Tilley Hats

I have been a fan of Tilley hats for over 40 years. I also used the guarantee when my sweat wore a hole in the front of my first one. I only like the original cotton “Aussie” style ones with the snap up sides and chin & head straps. The straps have saved my hats many times in strong winds. I...

    Snow? — Where You Are

I have about 4 feet (settled depth) in my front yard now. This winter has been a welcome reprieve from the ongoing drought in the west. Colder than normal though, with high temperatures below freezing for 3-4 straight weeks and a low of -18 F one night. Alta, 10 miles southwest of here, has...

Mad River ME for Whitewater Tripping?

I fully agree with ppine re Class 4-5 rapids. Just because my canoe is capable of making it through doesn’t mean that I want to try. At this stage of life the cost/benefit ratio does not pan out any more. I have friends who were heavily into running big water, life threatening rapids in...

Mad River ME for Whitewater Tripping?

I have an ME which I bought new in 1991. It is outfitted with a Bob Foote Grand Canyon saddle and air bags. It has run the San Juan and Green (Desolation Canyon) several times self supported and the Main Salmon with raft support. Last year we found another ME in great condition at a low price...

Help ID this Mad River canoe please

It looks more like a fiberglass hull. The Royalex Explorers don‘t have flotation foam in the bow and stern like that one. Also the material looks too thin to be Royalex.

Largest Lakes, Greatest Depths, and Other Watery Data

I have paddled on the Great Salt Lake a few times, usually in my sea kayak. It has good views of the Wasatch mountains to the east, but the closeup shoreline views are pretty non descript. It is very shallow and is receding rapidly, leaving wide salt flats along a lot of the shore. The high...

Trip Reports and Performance Review of B.N. Morris Wood-Canvas Canoe

Thanks Glenn. I enjoyed the writeup and photos very much. I somehow missed most of those paddling destinations during the 13 years I lived in Connecticut in the 70’s and 80’s. Still a beautiful area-especially at this time of year! 🛶

    I Can't Lift/Transport My Morris Canoe! . . . or can I?

You could trade the sedan for a pickup truck and get a cheap bed extender which goes in the trailer hitch. Very easy to get the canoe off of the cart and into the bed of the truck. I have transported various size canoes and sea kayaks (up to 18.5') this way. Just remember a red flag on back.

Grommets for grab loops on a MR Kevlar courier

Ours is 58” from the front endcap to the front of the front thwart and 94” to the front of the seat. Your 59” to center of the thwart looks about right. ( The thwart is 2” wide at the center.) The PO also installed a kneeling thwart 4” behind the front one. Paddles great in either direction.

Input request for a lightweight mostly solo fishing canoe

If you can find a Mad River Malecite from the 1980’s or 90’s it would be ideal. I am your exact size, but probably older, and really enjoy paddling my Malecite rescue solo, tandem and poling. Good luck.

Grommets for grab loops on a MR Kevlar courier

Glad to see another Courier rescued. What year is yours? My son has a 4/94 Kevlar Courier which he found in near pristine condition a couple of years ago. It appears to be stock. If you need any measurements or have other questions I will be happy to help.

Paddling a solo canoe with a Greenland style paddle?

This thread got me curious so I took my Greenland paddle and tried it with my MR Indy. I had never used a kayak paddle, GP or Euro in a canoe, but I greatly prefer a GP when sea kayaking. The paddle drip wasn’t as bad as I expected when paddling fast. The velocity of the blade in the air...

Refurbing a Mad River kevlar 49

The Watco Teak is also what I now use. They make a Watco “Danish” which looks nice on sanded ash rails, but I discovered that it is for interior use only. I should have read the label on the can years ago! Watco Teak is very liquid and I don’t think it needs to be thinned. I actually enjoy...

Refurbing a Mad River kevlar 49

Congrats on a nice find. The bird crap and dust must have preserved it well- it looked better than the one I bought in New Mexico a few years ago before you started on it. Mine had some kind of dry rot on the surface of the gunwhales and took a lot of sanding to get to the condition of yours...

Couldn't Resist: 15' B.N. Morris Customized Reproduction by Rollin Thurlow in As-New Condition

We have also experienced drought related problems with river/lake water access here in the west. I have had good luck using the little two wheel cart which I had purchased years ago to transport my sea kayak. It straps onto the stern of any of my canoes (solo or tandem) and lets me pull them...

    Arthritis is Handy

Some arthritis, believe it or not, can be caused by eating vegetables in the nightshade family, such as tomatoes, eggplant, and peppers. It may be worth experimenting with your diet. My brother and my wife both had dramatic reduction in symptoms by cutting way back or eliminating these foods...
