    Canoecopia 2025

This will be my first time going, excited to check it out. Would like to pick up a couple of paddles maybe, or at least handle them and get a feel for what I want to add to my list for the future. Would like to have another Badger paddle in a different wood maybe, and would also like to look...

Whatever happened to "canoe" life jackets?

Interesting. I grew up going to lakes in Illinois every weekend in the summer, with skiing as the main activity and still go fairly often, and I have never seen any pfd’s exactly like the ones I posted. Must not be popular around here. I only ever see the traditional recreational pfd’s with...

Whatever happened to "canoe" life jackets?

I too am interested in longer jackets, that are ideally less bulky. So I started searching and came across these that may fit some of your criteria. They are not designed for paddling, but rather for wake boarding or jet ski racing. Those sports also require mobility as a key feature, and...

    Prospector 15 Third Seat/Width Modification

This is a good point and I have worried about this too. I would be surprised if the seats were sealed at the ends. I meant to do a better job of sealing the center seat ends before install as well, so at some point I will probably pull all of them and varnish the ends just to be safe. I...

    Prospector 15 Third Seat/Width Modification

Finally got to go try out the new seat with a short float on Current River. Overall I liked it a lot. The higher seat height is way more comfortable for me. There’s just a lot more I can do with my legs now aside from just straight out in front. Very easy to kneel as well. Also, as it turns...

    Stress Relieving Paddle Design

Not to answer for ScottS, but I think you are right about otter tails being more lake paddles. However I also saw you were thinking about a beaver tail. While a beaver tail does carry more width lower in the blade which does help in shallower water, it is still not really ideal for shallow...

    Stress Relieving Paddle Design

I have been thinking about a Sanborn Nessmuk and it may meet most of your criteria. It has a smaller blade than many all wood paddles, and is designed to compete with carbon paddles (but is still mostly wood). It is actually lighter than some carbon paddles on the market. It’s a bent shaft...

I’d like to see your wood (gunwales that is), plus a question

Based on the comments here, I decided I should go ahead and purchase some Badger Paddle wood oil. I have a Badger paddle that I picked up late last summer and that I really like, and figured I should go ahead and oil it this winter, plus it would be good to have the oil on hand for when my new...

    Prospector 15 Third Seat/Width Modification

I was worried I would need to but with the amount I moved it, it didn’t turn out to be necessary. They are both tighter than they were, and there isn’t really a gap on the sides where there had been previously, but I didn’t find any undue pressure or signs of them visibly deforming any of the...

    Prospector 15 Third Seat/Width Modification

Where I’m at portaging is not very common, so the loss of the yoke is not a problem, I’ve never actually used it for portaging to be honest. I usually hold it by the gunwale in the center with the boat on its side to get it from the car to the water or I have someone with me and we use the...

    Prospector 15 Third Seat/Width Modification

Let me start by saying that I have been nothing but impressed with my Wenonah Prospector 15 since the day I got it. It has been everything I was hoping for - a good river boat, very maneuverable, excellent stability both initially and when heeled to the rails, excellent carrying capacity, etc...

The New Swift/DY Redesign of the Dragonfly

Is the far left plug in the photo the aforementioned Prospector 15 solo? Is that just like the combi version with the bow/stern seats removed, or is it a new, narrower design? Also, I’m assuming the rounder bottom of the dragonfly was mellowed out some into more of a standard Yost shallow...

Weather 1/25: Cold, Cold, Cold, Wind, Wind, Wind, Wind

We got more snow in Eastern Missouri this week than we’ve gotten in several years. Not canoeing weather per se, but we made do where we could.

Another couple of positives in the oiled finish column and a solid negative for the urethane. Good info, and much appreciated. This has all been just the type of first hand info I was looking for.

Holy Cow! Those pictures are night and day different, it really brought that wood to life. I really appreciate the side by side before/after. I am definitely leaning towards the lower maintenance of the varnish right now but I am still undecided. As I mentioned above in one of my other...

Boy that one is a beauty. I had not considered that as an option but it sounds like it may be a good “in between” option. It has certainly stood the test of time on that one. I’ll have to do some more research on the traditional marine varnishes.

I’d like to see your wood (gunwales that is), plus a question

I am of a similar mindset, I usually like more permanent solutions. Even though I may have the time now to keep up with frequent maintenance, I’d like to have the insurance that if I have a lapse I don’t create a lot more work for myself to get it back into good shape. I read through your...

I’d like to see your wood (gunwales that is), plus a question

Looking at that I would have never guessed it was a 30 year old boat, it looks fantastic. That’s good to know about the Watco and definitely gives me confidence in it. I am lucky that I have a detached garage/workshop to keep my boats in (installed a mini split with a buddy a couple years ago...

I’d like to see your wood (gunwales that is), plus a question

I was kind of thinking the same thing with the paddles, they see similar abuse and my varnished paddles seem to be holding up better than my single oiled paddle, which already needs some attention after ~6mo. The varnished ones seem like they’ll be good for a long while yet. Also, I would...
