Best Sleeping Pad for Side Sleepers and Comfort on the Trail?

I've never experienced motion sickness from it but I know what you're talking about. There are been times when I still feel like I'm swaying slightly long after turning over only to open my eyes and realize I'm not. I was most conscious of this when I first started sleeping in a hammock. The...

New to me Portage Pal trailer

I used an old boat trailer for mine. Laid some 2x6 stringers for a flat platform and screwed a piece of plywood down for a top. Fabricated some rough stands from square tubing and angle iron. The stands are removable (held in with hitch pins) so the trailer can be used as a flat platform. Here...

    What about a Wenonah Moccasin?

I don't think I've ever done a restoration, nor am I likely to. What I have done plenty of times is put a canoe back in service. Putting them 'back in service' is a lot faster and less money and you get to paddle them sooner. And you also don't care so much when it bounces off a rock. Alan

    What about a Wenonah Moccasin?

I'm unfamiliar with that model. I looked it up and it seems like an odd boat. It's built specifically for kneeling but has apparently no rocker and is not meant for big water. Sounds similar to the Whisper except for the seating arrangement. I don't know how cheap you mean by cheap but if it...

Finds, Relics, and Evidence from The Past

Sadie and I found the remains of a very large corral in the middle of nowhere on Fort Hall lake. It was on a peninsula jutting into the lake. There are no settlements anywhere nearby and the HBC outpost was abandoned in the 20's if I remember correctly. While it's not a well traveled...

New Issue with my Swift portage yoke

I've never had one inspected. In Iowa the state issues you a HID number and then you're supposed to apply that number to the hull in an permanent and acceptable matter. I still haven't quite gotten around to that. Alan

    It's National Pet Day

Here's Sadie the day after I got her as a rescue. She took to the canoe immediately and we had many happy years paddling and tripping. She's currently 16 years old still going strong. Well, maybe not strong but she's still going.

    Hornbeck canoes expanding

Based on their location, NE of Minneapolis, I would guess Lake Nokomis. This looks to be the closest lake and is where Midwest Mountaineering used to have test paddles. According to Google their storefront is a bit north of the old Midwest Mountaineering, on the other side of the river. Sounds...

    What's out West?

If I had an extra day or two to explore in that area I'd 100% recommend the west side of the Olympic Peninsula. While you're on the peninsula you can paddle Lake Crescent, which is is one of my more memorable paddles. I didn't know anything about the lake when a friend and I were driving out...

New Issue with my Swift portage yoke

I had assumed that tandems would not be equipped with removable yokes but I just looked on their site and see their "combi" tandems (with center mounted seat for solo paddling) do have the option for a center mounted yoke. But they're heaviest combi tandem layup (Keewaydin 17 in Expedition...

New Issue with my Swift portage yoke

I would guess the vast majority of people do not use their removable portage yoke when carrying the canoe to/from the car, especially these light weight solos. The only time I ever use mine is when I'm on a trip that requires portaging, otherwise it stays in storage. Solo canoes are easy enough...

New Issue with my Swift portage yoke

I can certainly see this being the case with an old hull that doesn't follow the current HIN guidelines. I would not think that would be so in this case however with a Swift that's only a few years old. Alan

New Issue with my Swift portage yoke

I'm not following why you would need a new hull ID number. We have to register canoes here as well. For out of state used canoes we either transfer the paperwork (if that state also required registration) or fill out a piece of paper stating that this canoe has never been previously registered...

New Issue with my Swift portage yoke

If it was mine I'd be temped to pour it full of epoxy and then thread a bolt into the threads that was really well waxed or wrapped with teflon tape. After the resin cures the bolt will hopefully thread out and things would hopefully be solid again. Alan
