Paddling in the wind, which way do you lean?

Mostly what others have said. Know thy strengths. Know thy limitations. Know thyself. Otherwise... My facetious approach is to lean into the coffee pot and give myself a generous pour, lean back in my chair, settle just under the tarps drip edge and enjoy the windswept view.

    Writer Looking for Canoe Info/Stories

Hey Chris, how about reading a journal written by a trip survivor? Here's a link. All thanks to Allan Jacobs and the Lanouette family. https://www.myccr.com/phpbbforum/viewtopic.php?f=181&t=46535

    Writer Looking for Canoe Info/Stories

My suggestion to the OP is to plan and carry out a research canoe trip. Try to emulate the situations and conditions as well as possible, without the suffering of course. Don't worry too much about the small stuff like exact canoe or gear chosen. You can imagine away the inconvenient stuff and...

There are times when a simplistic thumbs up or tearfully laughing emoji is terribly insufficient. This is one of those times.

    Anyone heard from Memaquay?

We're celebrating our Thanksgiving here so maybe he and family are out plinking some grouse for the table.

    Northern WI wolf attack

This may be true, but just this morning I recognized the vehicle in front of me waiting at the lights. I could tell it was our neighbour from up the block by the conspiracy paranoid stickers all over their bumper. And tailgate. And rear window. He must've run outta room on his garage and lawn. I...

    Northern WI wolf attack

Now don't plunk me down in the wrong camp when I say this Mem, but the ocassional bear has been seen to wander down south of Barrie without too many people freaking out. https://www.tvo.org/article/why-ontarios-black-bears-are-moving-south And to be fair, besides the snickerdoodle dog owners...

    Moose

Years ago when the kids were young we had one crash thru our campsite late at night. We'd stayed up earlier sitting around a fire listening to the wolfpack howling and felt closer to the wild. Hadn't imagined we could get closer than that. I bolted out the tent flap to investigate the ruckus and...

    Leaving firewood at camp

I've not often encountered firewood "voluntarily" left behind, more often (particularly in parks) the remnants of failed fires in the pit. But the rare times it is it has been a small and welcome offering. A small measure of etiquette I consider a strength of character rather than a weakness of...

New gear for 2024 and 2025?

My wife and I have 2 pr of sleeping bags, one pr down fill (0C) and the other pr Primaloft (-stupidC) Although the Prima is rated for colder temps I prefer the packability and comfort of down. I intend to retire the Primas as we're quite happy with the down mummys and wool blanket combinations...

    Leaving firewood at camp

No idea why anyone would scatter cut wood like that. Was it too green? Too wet? Too big? It can still be stacked for future use. I generally don't leave wood by the firepit only because it's usually exposed there to the elements. Instead I pile it towards the campsite clearing edge, often next...

Your three favorite pieces of comfort or luxury canoe camping gear

    2) Coffee A good cup of coffee makes every morning sing. On a sombre wet morn when the mist creeps out of the forest and swims across the waters the stillness is astounding, almost intimidating, whereas on bright mornings the fleeing shadows and rising sun feels welcoming. In any morning mood...

Your three favorite pieces of comfort or luxury canoe camping gear

It's hard to narrow all the luxuries down to just three. Just being there feels like a luxury I'm grateful to afford. I'm used to making do and doing without in life and our ocassional tripping life is no different, so the luxury additions to bare bones basic gear has been gradual and welcome...

What U.S. or Canadian documentation do you need to cross into the other country and back?

We just got back from a roadtrip thru the US. with a stop over in Killarney PP. Valid passports were all we needed. They are easy to acquire. We are by no means world savy travellers, but do like to see what's out there beyond our own backyards. So many rewards from so little effort.
