Paddling in the wind, which way do you lean?

I really haven't thought that much about it, I just always lean the canoe to my paddle side, unless things get hairy.

    Writer Looking for Canoe Info/Stories

There was a canoe racing circuit in the States and Northern Ontario in the 70's. One of the races occurred in a town 80k from me. The video below is from 1968, and if you are looking at how people get in and out of canoes quickly, there are some good examples.

    Northern WI wolf attack

We have an interesting project in the works up here. It's called "The Ring Of Fire", it's not a seismic earthquake area, but an area where extensive mineral development has been identified. One off the biggest in the world apparently. Negotiations are ongoing about building a road north of...

    Northern WI wolf attack

I suppose it depends on your definition of wilderness. Is a vast area in the middle of nowhere that has been clear-cut but sees very little human activity afterwards still counted as wilderness? That describes huge tracts of Northern Ontario. It does grow back, but if close to transportation...

Shooting Wolves in Defense of Pets

Lol, in the words from another forum I frequent, "In before the lock". Wolf tags cost ten bucks in Northern Ontario, I can buy two. So I can shoot a wolf for any reason, but I would hesitate to do so, as I really like the beasts. In most cases, a pre-emptive shot in their direction will be...

Paddling in the wind, which way do you lean?

Depends on wind strength. If it's a mild chop, I'll still heel the boat to my paddling side, but if it's a good blow, I stay centred and give'er for all I'm worth.

    Packing a Handgun for Wolves

When snowshoeing with my dog in wolf country, I always just carried a long gun on a strap around my back. We don't have access to handguns in Canada, and I'm not sure it would be your best bet if your main reason is to protect your dogs. I don't know about your wolves, but ours are pretty...

Thinking of making a carbon fiber paddle...

I have only bought two paddle for myself in my life, I made all the rest. The last one I bought is the one I use the most now, I'm pretty sure I couldn't make it, but you probably have a better skill set than my usual wood butchery style...

Alan has answered pretty well, you might want to check out the art of canoe poling, it was a standard method of upstream travel by people of the past. There are still a few people practicing it, but in the past it was a standard skill set for wilderness travelers. Not sure if your storey is...

    Northern WI wolf attack

Summary of canoetripping.net's latest fascination: Marauding moose Killer coyotes Bloodthirsty bears Wicked wolves Paranoid primates of the Homo Sapiens species We have had a very nice relationship with Canis Lupus up here for many years. Sure, he will eat your dog, but other than that, he's a...

    Snake infested water bodies

So my son learned this song a few months ago, we played it at our last gig, people even developed a dance for it. Warning...it is ear candy that will be hard to get rid of....

    Moose

Never been charged, have paddled within feet of cows and calves. Perhaps it is the high rate of hunting up here, moose are basically on the menu at all times. As previously mentioned, could be a correlation between moose attacks and dogs, although my 50 pound Siberia husky chased one of the...

    Moose

This might bee the case in Alaska, but it is certainly not that way in Northern Ontario. We fear moose running out of the ditch at night and smashing head long into our car. This is the only way moose injure or kill people up here. I have lived with moose for a long time, as have all my chums...

    Moose

Going out on a three or four day moose hunting trip this weekend, pretty sure nothing like that will happen.

Inherited strip canoe on mold mid build. Stripping started at the football and moved toward gunwales?

I'm not sure what the problem is from the pictures, but I'll take a stab at it. If you run a long strip or flexible piece of wood along the gunwale line, are there any areas that are not covered by strips? If not, just draw a pencil line and then cut the gunwale line. If there are areas with...

Video of 3 nights at a small lake in Maine

I see you're still doing a pretty good job of packing the grub into you, lol, I'm jealous of that one pan mega breakfast.

    Wilderness Express AKA Chestnut Pal

Yes, the idea is to give it to the Outers program when we finish. Boreal, funny story told to me on Friday. One of my colleagues overheard the grade nines talking, they were saying that the teachers were nice to them because they had to be, it was part of the job. One of the kids piped up and...

    Wilderness Express AKA Chestnut Pal

That's a really good idea. I had measured the the two stations on either side of the centre, and they were around 33.5.
