    A Raven from Scratch

You can skip the soaking step if you cut your strips at 1/8 inch. That's what I did for the last stems I built for the Raven, and the angle was much more severe than your seats. You could skip the epoxy for the seats too if you got some titebond 3. That's good stuff.

    A Raven from Scratch

Don't know about you fellas down in the 11th province, but up here the 2024 ranger only comes with the super crew and five foot box. It's a very comfortable ride, probably use the trailer for wood, still afraid to scratch it.

    A Raven from Scratch

The tree tops are available for firewood, the problem is that area is too far away to make it viable to get them. If I'm up there I'll sometimes load the truck up on the way back, but I've got spots a lot closer to get most of my firewood. One of my students built a raven as well, and he used...

    A Raven from Scratch

Looking great! One thing about hanging seats from the gunwale....It's easy to move it around if you find the distance from the centre needs to be changed. Just pop it off, re-drill and hang. Takes about a half hour. You can fill the old holes with epoxy of plug with dowling. Also, very easy to...

Swift Keewaydin 15 Review and Trip Reports in Winter Cold and Wind

That is a great report Glenn, thanks for risking life and limb for us! I think I really want one now, Swift should be giving you a commission after that write-up. That pretty much sums up the freedom that paddling can create.

    Stress Relieving Paddle Design

That was always my go to when my bicep tendonitis flared up. It's simple really...take a skinny paddle for most of your paddling, take a smaller carbon fibre for shallow water/rivers, and don't overthink it. Used to be a time when canoeing didn't involve much thinking at all, now it seems like...

    Larger Canoe: Tumblehome or Not

My final comment......three in a canoe might work out fine for you after a period of adjustment and practice, and picking appropriate routes. You will know in pretty short order whether or not it will feel safe or risky. I guess the concern would be, unless you are loaded with the dough, if it...

A La Mer du Nord 2025

I think back in the day, any canoe under 75 pounds was considered to be light, hence "feels like 50 pounds".

    "Ecopoxy" Resin

System Three silver coat is a very good canoe type epoxy. On Amazon, it is $299 Canadian for 1.5 gallons (5.7 litres) or $207.50 US. Not a huge difference. I usually use about 2 gallons total for a solo build. Interesting, Ecopoxy on Canadian amazon is $265 for 8 litres. It is a 1 to 1 mix...

A La Mer du Nord 2025

Wonder what size those are, they look pretty big.

    New Ash Gunwales

I stained all the ash trim for on of the canoes I was building, used a cherry flavour, then covered the trim in epoxy and varnish, looked very sharp. The canoe has long since gone to greener pastures, but the trim lives on, I have cannibalized almost all of it for other canoe builds.

    Larger Canoe: Tumblehome or Not

You could always take a really big leap, and build a cedar strip, lol. I stretched out a J. Winters Quetico to 20 feet. It was originally 18.5. It was 36 inches wide asymmetrical in shape and rocker. It was fine for two normal people with a smaller person in the middle with gear for a week. The...

    Solitude / Wilderness

Marshall Lake loop, Northern Ontario. Lots of trip reports on this site. It is a true loop trip, might see a boat or two on the last lake, but usually fairly isolated. Crown Land, only fee you would need is Crown Land Camping permit. My buddy and I usually maintain ports, hoping to get in end...

    Symmetrical and Asymmetrical

Asymmetrical in the consumer canoe market usually refers to a canoe where the bow and stern are not the same. Deferential rocker is usually part of the equation as well. Most asymmetrical canoes for tripping will have narrow bows and wider stern with more rocker in the bow. In a symmetrical...

    Larger Canoe: Tumblehome or Not

I have a Souris River Quetico 17. I would call it a comfortable canoe, good for neophytes. The 18.5 will be a stable canoe, and the advertised weight of 49 pounds is a bonus. I see they sell them standard with three seats as well, which would be a bonus. It might be one of the better options out...

    Larger Canoe: Tumblehome or Not

With the weight you suggested, I strongly recommend you test paddle some canoes before buying. Take your time, and try them out in the situation you are suggesting. With great respect to the experience here, some of the suggestions are not realistic. You can't make an informed decision from...

    Larger Canoe: Tumblehome or Not

Might help if you could tell us which particular canoe models you are looking at. Putting three people in a canoe might not go over the weight specs, but it might not be ideal either. We routinely ran 3 people to a canoe with grumman white water 17 footers, but two of the paddlers were usually...

Weather: Was it colder when you were a kid?

The weather is definitely changing up here. When I first arrived in Northern Ontario in 1989, there were long stretches of -30 to -40 temperatures in the winter. Polar highs would move in and settle for 4 to 6 weeks at a time. This trend usually started around Christmas and would let up around...

A Cold Cracking of Royalex Question

Our club had some early Mad River royalex boats as well, and they were stored outdoors in our frigid temps, where -40 was not unusual in the winter. They had wooden gunwales as well. None of them developed cold cracks. I haven't personally seen any canoes up here with cold cracks, I've only...
