Looking back on 2024 and what’s ahead for 2025

I'm the opposite - most of my trips are day trips. Finding days is easy, but its been tough to take weeks at a time. Hopefully that will change this year. I like trolling motors - especially on lakes traveling into the wind. I'm not proud.

Looking back on 2024 and what’s ahead for 2025

You should go for it - class II/easy III - lot of fun. Limiting factor for most is the ability to kneel. Last year I overdid it early in the spring and got a bad case of bursitis in my knee. It was so bad that I thought I was done kneeling in a canoe and bought a sea kayak. Fortunately it...

    Winter Solstice Poling Cruise

We get out there on occasion - Deerfield, Westfield, Housatonic, Shepaug. I'm sure there are others that you know. We should definitely try to get together.

Looking back on 2024 and what’s ahead for 2025

2024 was a pretty good paddling year of me – 54 trips with a good split between flatwater (19), whitewater (15) and sea kayak (18). What I didn’t get to do much of was camping – only 2 overnight trips. For 2025, I want to keep doing what I’m doing, but also get out on a couple of longer camping...

A History of David Yost's Solo Tripping Canoes by Charlie Wilson

I don't see mention of the Wildfire or Yellowstone Solo (RX and composite). Aren't those DY boats, or are they not considered trippers? Never mind - I see the answer. This is old - not sure how I stumbled on it this morning.

Year-end overnight camping trip on the Pawcatuck River in RI

There is a great website for finding put-ins in RI - Rhode Island Blueways. You can see the interactive map here. Click on what you want to see - water trails, hand carry launches and boat ramps, and it will give show you boat launches all over the state. https://exploreri.org/mapper3.php I...

Year-end overnight camping trip on the Pawcatuck River in RI

Rivers around here are usually open year-round - except the still water above the dams. We can usually get out all winter. Very lucky to have so many like minded paddlers around here - and the group is growing. We had a couple of young guys on this trip that are very good paddlers and...

Year-end overnight camping trip on the Pawcatuck River in RI

Not exactly sure where to put this, but it was winter and we were camping, so I’ll put it here. Last year I got together with some other members of our local club (RICKA) to do a year-end, overnight camping trip the last weekend in December. We had five campers on that trip and had a great...

Who’s still paddling a Royalex solo boat

I have a 1989 Mohawk Whitewater 16 - an earlier version of the Intrepid. It is an absolute battle tank, and weighs just about that much. Flat bottom, fun to paddle tandem, good for poling, but I never paddled it solo, until this weekend... We did an overnight trip on a local river, and I had...

Who’s still paddling a Royalex solo boat

There is not HIN. It's a long story, but it is not stolen - trust me. It was purchased around 2000.

A Christmas Story – and its true, honest

You’re probably not going to believe this, but its true. I saw Santa Claus, and he was not in a sleigh being pulled by reindeer. He was in a canoe - a red canoe. Here’s what happened. It was Christmas Eve a couple of years ago. I had finished all my shopping, so I decided to take my canoe out...

    Winter Solstice Poling Cruise

When you come to deep water there is nothing wrong with kneeling or sitting (or even standing) and switching to a paddle. You also might be surprised how fast you can go in deep water standing and using the pole in a modified double blade/kayak stroke. (Don't worry, Harry Rock said it is OK. ;)...

    Winter Solstice Poling Cruise

Everyone was wearing a drysuit - need it this time of year. I forgot how cold it is poling with a metal pole. Between the metal and the water dripping off the pole my hands got cold. Fortunately, one of the guys had an extra set of globes that I could use after lunch. When I paddle...

    Winter Solstice Poling Cruise

You should try it - its a lot of fun. Wood poles are pretty easy to make. Lots of people paddle standing with the long paddle. Folks interested in that will also probably also have a pole in case they need to push upstreams or snub downstream.

    Winter Solstice Poling Cruise

I don’t get out poling as much as I’d like to, but I was able to get out for a (day early) Winter Solstice Poling Cruise on the Nashua River. We did the section on the North Branch of the Nashua River from Leominster to Lancaster (MA). The river was about 2.5 feet on the Leominster gage - a...

Double blade paddle . . . worth it?

I'll offer one of those arguments in favor of the double blade. It might come as a surprise because I am also a single blader for life - at least in a canoe. I took as gospel the old adage "half the paddle, twice the paddler" until I took my sea kayak out into big ocean swells - waves going one...
