    Dutch Oven Recipes

Been a while since anyone posted in this one, but here are some of my favorite Dutch oven recipes. https://eckilson.blogspot.com/search/label/Dutch%20Oven I use the dutch oven mostly for baking. I use charcoal since it provides more reliable heat, but I need to get better at using coals from...

Poll: How old were you when you got YOUR OWN first canoe (and what was it)?

2004 Bell Yellowstone Solo - first and last boat that I bought new at a dealer (in 2004), and the one I would keep if I could only have one.

Poll: How often do you paddle alone (one boat) vs. with a group?

I have done 49 trips so far in 2021, and 17 of them were alone, so about a third. I'm happy to paddle alone, but all things being equal I'd rather paddle with friends. Of the 49 trips, I did 9 tandem - more than usual, but I am getting lazy on longer trips and it is nice to have two engines ;-)

    Umbagog

Little late, and nothing too ambitious, but here is my trip report from our spring trip on Umbagog Lake - 3 nights on 3 different campsites. Always seem have wind there, but a nice way to kill a few days. http://eckilson.blogspot.com/2021/06/umbagog-lake-camping-june-7-10-2021.html Glad things...

Moose River Bow - Attean to Holeb Portage

Mid week trip, so I don't think we 'll have a lot of competition for campsites. I was there on Memorial Day weekend a couple of years ago and the black flies were brutal. Long sleeves and a head net helped, but a smokey fire helped more. Probably paddle tandem - I have a Spirit II in...

Moose River Bow - Attean to Holeb Portage

Thinking about doing the Bow trip in May. In the past we have used an outfitter to take us to Holeb Pond, but this time we are planning to avoid the shuttle and paddle up Attean to the portage trail. So how bad is that portage? Can you use a cart? I remember the shorter portage around Holeb...

    Magalloway, Umbagog, Rapid and Androscoggin

I love my Wildfire. I also have a royalex Yellowstone Solo, but it doesn't get paddled as much as it use to. With me and my gear the Wildfire is loaded up pretty well and a little light on freeboard, but it still paddles fine. Wind was from the south and we had some whitecaps and 1-foot...

    Magalloway, Umbagog, Rapid and Androscoggin

I missed my spring camping trip this year due to COVID-19, so I was bound and determined to do something in this fall. Last weekend I got out for a three-day (two-night) trip on the border of NH and ME. We paddled down the Magalloway River from Wilson’s Mills to Lake Umbagog, across the upper...

Rethinking 30 years of soloing tandems

I have to agree with this. For me, if I'm paddling alone, it is so much easier to be in a dedicated solo boat.

Connecticut River - Woodsville, NH to Orford, NH

Nice foliage, but pictures would have looked better if the sun was out, at least for a little while. ;-)

Connecticut River - Woodsville, NH to Orford, NH

Thanks Doug. We should do a Pemi run sometime before everything freezes up. I know Jonathan would be up for it.

Connecticut River - Woodsville, NH to Orford, NH

It reminded me of the Samuel Benton Campsite upstream in Maidstone, VT. That site is also on the edge of a hayfield.

Connecticut River - Woodsville, NH to Orford, NH

With work and family, it’s tough for me to get away to do long trips. Instead, I have been doing more long-weekends. One of the perfect rivers for these trips is the upper Connecticut – it’s not too far away (at least for me in RI), the river is pretty (but not exactly wilderness), and there are...

How high is too high on the CT River

Fortunately, we don't know the answer to the original question, but I can tell you that 5-6 feet (3K to 4K cfs) on the North Stratford gage is a perfect level for the the trip from Canaan to Bloomfield. When we put in on Wednesday, the level was 6 feet, 4000 cfs. By Friday it had dropped to 5...
