Solo Composite Canoe that can do it all 😉

The Hemlock Eaglet is a stable boat that tracks well, has good capacity, and has a lot of stability. I stood up in one at the WPASCR event this past summer and was able to rock back and forth without any stability issues. I wouldn’t hesitate to stand up and fish out of it in flat water. I also...

    Merry Christmas 2024, Canoe Trippers!

It’s a Kevlar 1982 ladybug. I believe the #2 hull pulled from the mold. It has a couple patches and some ugly skid plates, but that’s just character. Hemlock got it from someone in Florida a year or so ago (hence the skid plates to protect it from oyster beds) and cleaned it up, added all new...

New Swift Tandem - Lavieille 17-6

I agree with members above that this is likely targeted at families and scout/young adult groups. I doubt (3) 200 lb adults would want to paddle that boat on a trip, but (3) small adults or a young family would be perfect. I just ordered a Souris River Quetico 18.5 for the family. I have 3...

What height boots do you prefer?

In general I prefer a mid-height boot that offers some ankle support. I like the added insurance against a twisted ankle. For paddling, portaging, tripping I wear the Astral Rassler 2.0 water shoe and love them. Not necessarily boots, but they feel more stout than shoes, have great grip, drain...

What do you think about the idea of having vendor forums?

I think this could be a good idea and potentially expose members to some of the smaller canoe dealers in their areas. As long as it stays within one forum and doesn’t bleed into other areas of the site I could get behind this.

    A Raven from Scratch

I think as the builder, you can tell the world it was meant to be there, and that’s that. Haha.

    Lets make some paddles

I am in the process of making a bow out of Osage. The yellow is quite vibrant. The wood will darken over time and eventually become a dark brown. I’m curious to see how this paddle turns out.

    High winds

In windy conditions the heavy end of the boat (bow or stern) will want to point into the wind. This is because the heavy end of the boat is sitting deeper in the water and the light end is riding higher and catching more wind. This causes the boat to want to pivot around the heavy end until said...

Show us pictures of your canoe dogs

This is our girl Arwen. She does great in the canoe and loves swimming and running the portage trails. She had her first multi-day trip this past summer and will be joining me on many more. I am quite allergic to dogs, but always wanted a golden retriever. She definitely takes after the...

    Mad River in Billings

I saw the listing for that boat and wished I was closer. That price is a steal! Congrats on a great find.

Another new camping trend - individual tents

@Gamma1214 I had my 4 yr old on some portage trails in Massasauga PP this year. I plan to take my 3 yr old twins along next time. It’s no problem at all.

Bad back and purchasing a new lightweight canoe

@TimJ we have a member on this site (@NoelCanoeDad) who is a dealer of slipstream boats. Might be worth reaching out to him. I know he accommodates test paddles/demos.

    Barbless hooks

I have never fished barbless, but I’ve never been in an area that required it. My understanding is this is much more prominent in Canada, and there are entire provinces that require barbless hooks (Manitoba). I don’t think using barbless hooks would affect one’s success rate with fish species...

    More grocery store options.

I use the chicken pouches quite often on trips for easy quesadillas or burritos. My kids will also eat the chicken right out of the pouch. I just make sure I have an extra gallon ziplock baggie along as a garbage bag for the empty pouches.

Old Town Columbia - Have you paddled one?

The boat was in great shape and looked like it would be a fast hull, it just didn’t seem to have the capacity I would need for the whole family. If I had more storage I would have bought it for a later stage in life when the kids could actually contribute to paddling a tandem.

Old Town Columbia - Have you paddled one?

An opportunity to purchase a Kevlar Old Town Columbia has fallen into my lap. I’m going to take a look at it tomorrow morning. Does anyone have any experience with and/or recall the specs for this boat? I know it’s over 18’ long and primarily a lake boat. I’m considering it for lake camping...

Tarp type and set-up style, and let's see some pix

This is the Kelty Noah’s Tarp 12. I bought it last minute for a trip this year with a poor weather forecast. I think I got it on sale for $60 at Sportsman’s Warehouse. The cordage comes with the tarp and can be packed away into Velcro pouches sewn into each corner. It comes with the quick...
