    Knives and other bladed tools

Thanks for all the input so far. Madmike: I think I must be the only person who uses knives for the outdoors that doesn't like Mora knives. I don't know why. I've just never warmed up to them. But by all accounts, you are 100% correct that they are top quality at a really good price...

    Tarp size

I'm beginning to lean towards something like a 10x12. Just to have that little extra space and protection from wind & rain if I need it. Thanks for the input.

    Tarp size

Thanks. That's where I'm leaning, a 10x10 should be big enough. But I'm just not sure...

    Knives and other bladed tools

Sweetfancymoses, I think you hit the nail on the hear and that's my dilemma. Other than cutting rope and food prep, I don't use a knife all that much (but probably more than I realize). But I feel somehow naked without a reliable knife on me if things go bad. So I want a good knife with me...

    Tarp size

Need a new tarp. I never have had a good one. Probably going to go with a CCS Tundra tarp, for all the obvious reasons. And I am a rank amateur when it comes to using tarps compared to many of you here, but I do like square or rectangular tarps. They seem more versatile than those funny...

    Knives and other bladed tools

As the ice slowly melts, I've been doing my usual spring organizing. Somehow my organized stuff gets disorganized over the winter. Got me thinking about knives. I usually have an assortment of knives with me, small folders scattered around in bags, in my pockets, etc...and also a larger...

Half day Wisconsin paddle with my dog Jake.

Nice post. Like the boat, like the dog. North of you here in the UP, the inland lakes are still solid. Anxious to get out.

    Tripping shoes/boots......again

Alan, The only surface I have slipped on in my Bean boots was grass, on a wet lawn, on a hill. I've never had issues of slipping on any other surface with them. I think I called them Maine Guide Shoes in an earlier post, I meant Maine Hunting Shoes (getting my canoes and boots confused) The...

    Tripping shoes/boots......again

For warmer water, I've taken to using these from Chota with wool socks: They are both sturdy and comfortable. I don't care for neoprene socks personally, but for those that do, they would work fine under this boot

    Tripping shoes/boots......again

Hopefully this isn't a highjack... For colder weather paddling, I still like LL Bean Maine Guide shoes. But I like the new ones less than my old ones....I had to return a pair of 10" Maine Guide Shoes because some stitching was coming undone. Instead of re-stitching, I guess Bean now just...

    McCormick Wilderness

The McCormick Wilderness is a wonderful area. Full of wildlife. I've never portaged in, just hiked along the edges. However, a friend has managed to get his Grumman 17 into the Baraga Lakes and other lakes in there. I don't know his route, but I can check into it. Getting my canoe in there...

Hello from the upper peninsula of Michigan

I want to say "Hi" and to thank all of you for the wealth of information you provide on this site. It is just amazing what all of you know about canoes and paddling. I have learned quite a bit by lurking on this site for a while, decided it was time to actively join. Cheers.
