    Can I borrow your axe?

I got to say that lending out an edged tool is just basically fraught with bad Juju, especially with old tools that have been brought back from rust with many hour of ones life. I've got a couple horror stories, and the axe or other blade is only one of the victims, as my opinion of the various...

    Can I borrow your axe?

For splitting small wood and making kindling in front of the fireplace im a fan of the froe. In a tent with a stove I've always batoned wood some sort of big knife. A big hack knife made out a lawn mower blade or big cleaver might be handy. You can keep a file edge on it and not shed a tear if...

Klepper Kamerad (Fiberglass Solo Decked Canoe Conversion) ? Price

Well I just happend across this post, while sitting and staring at my own Klepper Kamerad Kit, and I have a pretty good idea of what all the parts and materials and how much time you must have invested. 2k would be a good deal for the right person. I think listing it on the watertribe and...

Direct satellite link to ordinary, unmodified mobile phones by 2023-2024...

Theres also the group dynamic, and what constitutes an emergency. I have dealt with panicked people, and I would not want to argue about what constitutes an emergency. IE running out of food 2 days out, and I was the guy being stingy with the EIPRB.

Direct satellite link to ordinary, unmodified mobile phones by 2023-2024...

= "when you absolutely need assistance" I agree that 2 way communication opens up a world of logistical convenience and effective anxiety management. Dead/Not Dead as a primary concern points to carrying an EPIRB as a personal choice. If I was doing anything more adventuresome or traveling...

Direct satellite link to ordinary, unmodified mobile phones by 2023-2024...

I'm more inclined to get an EPIRB at this point. Less to go wrong when you absolutely need assistance. And it's realy simple to take one on every outing without worrying about batteries and inconveniently lapsed subscriptions.

    Need some royalex advice

I've had good luck cleaning up glue on royalex with a sharp hand scraper filed to a bit of a curve and the corners relieved so they dont dig in. I've used goo gone and mineral spirits on royalex. Acetone will melt the outer layer, but a quick wipe seems to smooth sand paper scratches with out...

Putting up a Shelterlogic canoe shed.

Well I ended up shoveling 3-4 tons to the side, and spreading the rest out for a level pad from 4" to 9" over 24' . Crusher run may have been more appropriate, but the idea of setting up a level strong back won over the idea of working on a car in there. Big shocker yesterday as lumber...

Putting up a Shelterlogic canoe shed.

Apparently there's a learning curve to ordering gravel and translating between yards and weight. And some drivers have the knack and some don't. Now I've got an extra 4 tons to to put elsewhere with a shovel.

Putting up a Shelterlogic canoe shed.

Good points about the doors. I can put grommets on the bottom corners of the doors and clip them down with carabiners to the frame.

Putting up a Shelterlogic canoe shed.

Mid-Atlantic, Eastern Shore. Kinda wet. I've got a bunch of gunnels to replace since I moved here.

Putting up a Shelterlogic canoe shed.

I've got a 10x20 Shelterlogic shed on the way, that I intend to use as a canoe shed. I got tired of watching my nicer boats disintegrate in the elements and doing all my work in the driveway. I ordered a shed with a 15 year pvc skin, green with a white panel in the roof, for light and less...

    Barrier Islands & paddle-in camping

I just found this "Tides" web site that has scrolling NOAA charts for all US waters. It also shifts to satellite imagery when you zoom in. Pretty fun for "scouting" https://www.usharbors.com/harbor/maryland-chesapeake-bay-east/

Mad River Northwoods info sought. UPDATE: I Bought It.....

I've got one that the wood work rotted off of. It ended up out side for a year and mushrooms sprouted immediately from the gunnels. Other canoes in the pile of neglect have faired much better. I'm not sure if it's a mad river thing but a while back I was given a kevlar Malachite hull that the...

Re-useing/ R- gluing vinyl anchors with G Flex?

I think I may end up using a different kind of anchor patch but I do have a new to me technology to report. I had ordered a rotary adhesive and pinstripe remover to clean up the sand encrusted contact cement that is all over the interior of my own personal Klepper Kamerad. I chucked the eraser...

Re-useing/ R- gluing vinyl anchors with G Flex?

Quick question. Is it worth trying to re-use vinyl anchor? I saved a box of old Northwater anchors that fell off of a Roylex boat and now I need a couple anchors on a fiber glass boat. I was going to use G-Flex epoxy to glue them on. I've tried 3M adhesive remover on them but sand paper is...

Any good contemporary composite boat building books out there?

I'm dusting off the boat building thinking cap after a many years of other distractions. Professionally I had a reasonable handle on boat yard epoxy work, but I haven't seen my 20 year old copy of the Gougeons manual in a while. I did note that there was a lot of cool new to me stuff going on...
