Our Winter of Content in Canada's Western Arctic

Your story regarding your wife's wine freezing reminded me of a late season, remote moose hunt where we went in 50 miles by sno-go and after setting up the wall tent and preparing for the night, our Crown Royal wouldn't pour.......had to set it by the wood stove for a while.

Our Winter of Content in Canada's Western Arctic

Great Story Pitt! I can relate as I live at the end of the Alcan and my Dad worked on construction of Alcan and Canol during WWII. Having made nearly half a hundred RTs on the Alcan, I just lived another with your story. Vans are hard to heat as there is a lot of volume. I can't imagine that...

North Slope while it's still there.

There's usually some good char fishing in the Colville also.

North Slope while it's still there.

You've got a few things to sort out yet. You might want to pull out at Umiat and hire a flight out. I know of no bus or van service on the Haul Road so you may want to research that one further. If you float on to Nuiqsut Village or Alpine Oilfield, you are then dependent on using oil company...

Much more sex appeal in that rounded bow!

    top quilt

For summer canoe trips or early caribou and dall trips, we use quilts by Enlightened Equipment. Our air mattresses are the insulated types. A very versatile system.

    Bivy Sacks

We use bivys when moose hunting as our tents are exposed on high ridges and the bivy is insurance should we lose our tent in the night from high winds.

    Yukon River 2019

I prefer July or August as the bugs have usually declined.

    Yukon River 2019

YP has more experience than I for Five Finger Rapids but we have taken the right finger and cut across the channel before the standing waves. If not paying attention, it could be troubling! It's a very enjoyable trip but fishing isn't great. Be sure to read-up on Fort Selkirk and plan on...

    Yes, I still paddle.

Good idea on the Garmin......I had to revert to Swedish GPS to avoid friends searching my Garmin for lake trout holes. Canoes are a great moose retrieval tool but that deadfall sure would make for difficult packing. Our moose season was very slow due to warm September.

    What are you reading?

Gotta agree with Mike......a great book....."81 Days Below Zero" I've floated the Charley River and I hunt caribou in the vicinity of the WWII bomber wreckage.

    satilite text device advice please

I've been using my pre-Garmin In Reach for several years in remote Alaska and Yukon Territory......works very well and battery life lasts for 2 week trip easily. I only turn it on late/early in the day......I don't recall ever being shut down because of cloud cover.

Critter added insult to injury of the roll-top table

Glad to see I'm not the only victim of porcupines......it's all part of being out there until they eat the cork grip off your new high-end fly rod.

    Robens Tents

Any experience with Roben tents? Made in Denmark but I don't find any North American dealers although there is some listings on EBay. Some very interesting designs and some interesting reviews. The Klondike model has some appeal for some of my trips.

Big square stern Grumman for McCrea/Joel

Not a bad buy if you have use for the entire package!

    What are you reading?

Currently reading "Sources Of The River", tracking David Thompson across Western North America. This definitely not a how-to book. Our winter persists so I have gone back through a couple of Cal Rustrum's books. I met Cal way back in my formative years. I think I have most of his books.

Square Sterns for Hunting and Fishing.

Gotta agree Robin! Grummans don't draw much attention for beauty and craftsmanship!

Best donuts or best donuts on the Road

Huge cinnamon rolls at Johnson's Crossing.....about Mile 800 Alcan Highway.......eat one of those before starting down the Teslin River and you're good for the day!

    Old Eureka! drawtite help

The larger tent would be my preference but to buy a 40 year old cotton canvas tent sight unseen plus $150 shipping to AK......with a bent pole.....not quite exciting! There were a few "nylon" Draw Tites made but I havn't seen one listed any where.
