11 days, 2 moose, big water, great weather....

I'm glad to see this thread up again as I sit here planning a summer that may be difficult at best. I've been a moose hunter for over a half century and It's great to hear another's stories. If you haven't hunted moose, breaking down a big bull in the water is a real PIA.

    Post Apocalypse Tripping World

If I get to canoe in the Yukon Territory this year, I would think I may see fewer Europeans [usually Germans]. We'll see if the direct flight from Germany to Whitehorse happens this summer.

    Moving Forward with Plans

Hopefully the border restrictions will lift and we can canoe some where in Yukon Territory again. We might circumnavigate Atlin Lake and portage over to Tagish and Marsh Lakes. The fishing and camping is better than most of the river trips. If we can't canoe YT, then we'll probably put in...

    Freighter canoe moose scouting

Nothing wrong with a couple ruffed grouse for dinner! This is where the freight canoe really shines. The carrying capacity and fuel consumption really come into play for expeditions like moose hunting. I have a 19' Grumman that I run an 8HP Yamaha on and haven't checked speed but it's almost...

The Compleat Guide to Modern Bear Deterrence

We use the electric fence around our tents when on Kodiak hoping our gear will still be intact when we return at the end of the day. We've had success with the Critter Gitter when camping along the Yukon River and camp was approached by black bears.

    I've been Enlightened!

I've used the 20 degree for three summers and I love it.....if temperatures get near freezing, it is a bit too light. Otherwise I love these quilts.

    Gheenoe Squareback Canoe - $995

I wish you were coming this way......a bit far for me to pick it up.......we like a wider stern for our square sterns as we travel in shallow braided rivers frequently. Currently I use a 19' Grumman and 21 Scott HB.

    Yukon maps

I hope they make them available at the book store or sports store when I'm there this summer. Love to have a couple for my wall.

    Trapper Nelson Indian pack boards

My Trapper Nelson is still in good condition but I use it as a display for Dall Sheep horns and am old coffee pot......looks good on the wall.

    Pants?

Redundancy is mostly underwear and socks on trips as long as a month. For pants, I like the Railriders.....they have 2-3 models that work well. I do take a pair of fleece pants like worn under waders as these are great under rain pants on those cold nasty days.

    Time to Get Down!

I also use the Enlightened Equipment down to frosty nights but I'd order 20 degrees colder than you expect. My 20 degree quilt is a bit chilly at frost.

    Yukon River 2019

PaddlinPitt, Have you read Robert Campbell's Yukon?.......it will sure sure make you appreciate Fort Selkirk. I may have to go back next year and spend more time.

What do you drink on a trip?

My YT [yukon territory] friends admonished me years ago for carrying watered-down 86 proof whiskey when weight is important. They introduced me to Lamb's OP [over-proof] 151 rum. I always have a bottle in my pack for that evening hot buttered rum laced with nutmeg.

    Yukon River 2019

Lotsa memories there! You write a very nice trip narrative....well done! Not sure what's in store for this summer.....Pelly?......Salmon?....Scottie Creek/Chisana?

A good bear story with a happy ending

Gene and his brother Ed were quite the characters......good, hard working old guys.

AK Destinations: Tangle Lakes, Delta, Gulkana

I've never looked for a portage trail from Upper Tangle to Dickey Lake and down the Middle Fork but it may be easier to go down Swede Creek from Swede Lake to Middle Fork. Again, I've not checked out the size of the creek but salmon do migrate up to Swede Lake.

AK Destinations: Tangle Lakes, Delta, Gulkana

That's two different watersheds IIRC and a bugger to portage. Tyone is in the McLaren/Sustitna drainage and Gulkana is in the Copper River Drainage if not mistaken.

The Upper Tangles [way back] offers some nice grayling also.
