Interesting terrain there, suess. Nothing like that around here. I love seeing photos from places I have never been.

    Fire Starters

Here is a wee phone video I took earlier this year, of a friend lighting a fire in the rain. The 6" chunk of solid fuel rocket engine he used seemed to light easy in the rain, and sure did get the fire going. Not recommended for lightweight travel though. :)

    Fire Starters

I made up a few hundred, or so, fire starters a few years back, and still have a few. I only use them when needed, which is maybe 5% of the time. I rerolled toilet paper up without the tube until it was about 3/4" thick, dipped it in melted wax, then as it cooled, flattened it to about 1/4"...

Great stuff, thanks Robin. Not a huge deal in the overall scheme of things, just one of those nice to have features.

I am familiar with quite a few forums that use vBulletin software. On all of them, user information is often displayed under the avatar. I find when things like location are listed there, it helps understand a lot of aspects about the posts this member makes. On a RV trailer site I go to, it...

    Cowboy Coffee thoughts

I have tried it, and it is not too bad,WAY better than instant. But then, even as a self proclaimed coffee snob, if push comes to shove, there are very few coffees I would turn down, if it meant going without otherwise. :) With these coffees, just like the Via or even those Keurig cups, you...

    Cutting tapers...

I don't have any photos Karin, but using a table saw is the way I do it. I just attach the piece to be cut to a scrap of plywood, with the cut line parallel to the edge of the plywood that will ride along the fence. I use this method quite a bit too, when I have boards with curves in them, to...

    What dose ageing canoer need?

I too have carried a candle lantern, the same one too, for 35+ years. It is rare that it gets left behind, mostly in the middle of summer only. Not too bad for light, though mostly use my LED headlamp now, but as you mention, they are fantastic for in the tent. On cold nights, I light it about...

    What dose ageing canoer need?

There are definitely better priced, and equally comfortable mats our there, though with lesser insulation, than the DownMat. I would definitely suggest looking at them first, if you are not sleeping on snow. I do still do winter ski touring, and do sleep on the snow. In the summer, the DownMat...

    What dose ageing canoer need?

What I have used for ages now, is a fleece stuff sack, about 12x16", with a Velcro tab for a closure. For years I would just use some soft clothes in it, but lately I have added one of those tiny down pillows to the camp kit. I find with the Exped DownMat 9, I need very little loft for my head...

    Photo of the day

I put this photo from two weeks ago today on my intro post, but thought I would show it here too. This was taken at Maligne Lake in Jasper NP. Outstanding scenery there, seriously one the the top 10 most beautiful places I have ever been.

A beer with a canoe on it I can recommend

I was turned on to them 4-5 years ago by a somalia an Calgary Co-op Liquor Stores, which has a massive Wall of Beer. I was browsing some of the imported Belgian offerings, when he told me to try some of the Unibroue offerings. Not one I don't like, but do have a few favourites, including...

solo canoe for both sitting and kneeling

If you want to be able to handle kneeling for longer lengths of time. I highly recommend doing some yoga. I used to kneel for no more than a minute, tops. Usually while I ran a big rapid. After doing a fair bit of yoga over the last few years, I can now kneel for 5-10 minutes before needing to...
