Thoughts on a Bell Merlin ii (not that I'm looking for another canoe...)

Thanks for the feedback. Here are some pictures of the interior of the boat. The first two pictures are the bottom of the boat. Not sure this is normal, I rather doubt it based on the pictures I've seen of other boats.

Thoughts on a Bell Merlin ii (not that I'm looking for another canoe...)

Managed to get it out on the water for a short paddle last night, a very different boat from the Prospector. I like it! Think I finally understanding what you mean by 'glide'. It is much faster in a straight line and also more difficult to turn. I'll explore how far I can heel it over...

Thoughts on a Bell Merlin ii (not that I'm looking for another canoe...)

Yep, I just did! :D Thank you all for the feedback, I'm back at the office now but will stop on the way home and take it for a short test paddle. The guy I purchased it from had it under cover outside for about 10 years, However, everything looked sound and I couldn't see any cracks. It's so...

Thoughts on a Bell Merlin ii (not that I'm looking for another canoe...)

I've been watching canoes here for awhile and that seemed like a good deal to me as well. Just wasn't sure how it would fit in the arsenal (to similar to the prospector - which it doesn't sound like). Looks like I might be selling a sea kayak to make room, but that'll be okay. Variety is the...

Thoughts on a Bell Merlin ii (not that I'm looking for another canoe...)

I just try to listen to folks. :-) Came across this on craigslist (the bane of my existence) and thought I would ask opinions: https://portland.craigslist.org/mlt/boa/6210825494.html For those of you that might not have seen the other thread, I am realizing how difficult it is to toodle...

Wind + Distance = Reality Check?

Me too! :D Unfortunately having two canoes isn't really an option right now even though I see the benefit of it. So I will work with the other ideas that have been suggested and that will likely start to move me in the right direction. ;) Even in the wind. yellowcanoe: I went at looked...

Wind + Distance = Reality Check?

Bill Mason's books are on order! :-) Will look into a proper tilley hat, since that will make all of this better. :-D As far as the location where I was sitting, generally on the kneeling thwart (see below); when the wind was down, the back seat (not often). This picture was taken when I still...

Wind + Distance = Reality Check?

It is a 15' tandem, and I think it's 36 inches max width. The stems are high (24"), 2 1/2" of rocker, and the center depth (14"). (yes, it is a sail) As far as my experience in a canoe - very little. This is the first time I have spent any meaningful time in a canoe in years. My past experience...

Wind + Distance = Reality Check?

That makes sense, the prospector is a tandem and while I had 'stuff' in it, it wasn't enough to equate to the weight of another person. The dedicated solo canoes would also be narrower and have less freeboard as well?

Wind + Distance = Reality Check?

Hi Everyone, I finally had the opportunity to spend a day in the little Prospector and had an absolute blast. Played in a little bit of current with ferry angles, s-turns, etc. Luv'n the boat. I had a great time but sort of wanted to die by the end of the day. The situation was...

    Can a Mercedes-Benz E350 be a canoe car?

Well, with the little foamy block things I think you could make it work, should you make it work, maybe not. Like a few others have noted I think you need to actually see if a rack system will work...however, I came across this the the day on Craigslist in Portland.... My husband was no...

    Tips on float bag installation

Thanks Mike, exactly what I needed. Topkayaker didn't have them in stock per their website but Blue Mountain Outfitters has an online store so I ordered through them. Their packages come with the rivets which reduces the guesswork on whether I picked up the right ones too. I'll check the drill...

    Tips on float bag installation

Thank you all for the feedback - it sounds like the general consensus is the diminutive p-clip. Next question - where to do I locate goods ones? I have ordered what I thought were good quality plastic bits online and what arrived in the mail was not what I was not something I was willing to...

    Tips on float bag installation

Mike - You are right, that would be a great test. Wish I was closer so I could stop by with popcorn, a lawn chair and watch. :D

    Tips on float bag installation

LOL, that is actually what I was pondering about 4 o'clock this morning. So, thanks for the heads up. I am actually in favor of an idea that utilizes riveting the plastic piece similar to your first picture to the boat and allows for webbing or cord/line to be used for the actual lacing versus...

    Tips on float bag installation

Starting to sound like my sea kayak, although your picture is perhaps a bit broader in the beam... I do rather like that "Folly of FartherWest" and will tuck it away for future use. Perhaps when I start posting a few trip reports, this might be a very appropriate way to set the scene...

    Tips on float bag installation

I learned years ago that I can sink almost anything, including those things which are not supposed to be sinkable (a lesson my 4-H leader learned the hard way). Class 2-3 are the goal with the boat, and given that, rocks are more possible then I would like to admit. Self-rescues are also a must...

That is a beautiful job! Where did you get those bags?

    Tips on float bag installation

"Swiss Cheesy" Exactly! It's hard enough to contemplate drilling holes in a new boat, but impossible to think of doing that many. The pad eyes and a variety of other things have been in the garage for awhile but... well... there had to be a better way which is why I finally asked for ideas...

    Tips on float bag installation

So I guess this is my response to Alan's question about what is going on in my shop (garage) this winter. Outfitting the new boat. The Prospector is made of Tuffweave and although I asked Wenonah where I should install the rivet/lashing kit, a friend who has a Kevlar Wenonah also did so in a...
