    Cross Cut Hand Saw

There are abrasive wheels for 4-1/2" grinders that are good at removing rust. https://www.mcmaster.com/#sanding-discs/=15m4vkw You may find them at a hardware store or home center. They are like a heavy duty version of Scotchbrite. I would use Scotchbrite for the areas needing hand cleaning...

    Ferro rods...

While it's not exactly on topic, Wintertrekker (Hoop on this forum, I believe), has a video on his waxed jute firestarting system here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZsI6H0zx0BA I've used similar things, but was glad to be reminded of this.

    Map Storage/Organization

Having been an engineer for forty years, I would prefer to keep flat maps in flat files. Rolled maps are a distant second since it is very difficult to get them flat again. I would not fold a map unless I planned to take it into the field. The creases damage the paper more than I like. I would...

Is my problem technique or boat trim or?

I gather that you were paddling a tandem canoe solo from the rear seat facing forward. I don't know if you can paddle that particular canoe backwards sitting in the bow seat facing what used to be the stern. Your trim would be much simpler that way. As YC said, you can't always do that. I paddle...

    Removing varnish from the inside

I wouldn't be surprised to find that strippers work fairly well in cool temperatures. It would slow down evaporation. Most of the solvents are pretty hot, meaning that they evaporate quickly. That's part of the reason for the gel strippers, to slow down evaporation and keep the solvents in...

    Removing varnish from the inside

Strypeeze contains Dichloromethane, also known as Methylene Chloride. It is a very powerful solvent also found in carburetor cleaner. Beyond that, there is also Methanol, Toluene and Acetone, all good solvents, but it's the Dichloromethane that does the stripping. Methyl Ethyl Ketone, also known...

    Breakfast ideas

I may have mentioned this before, but there is a product that was available at Walmart for a not too unreasonable price. It's called "Coffee Thins", a wafer that could be chocolate, but it's coffee. I bought some a while ago and they weren't too bad, but I wasn't really looking for coffee...

    Best tripping coffee mug?

I use a stainless steel vacuum bottle by Bubba. It was cheap, holds about a pint and has a sipping lid that doesn't leak when turned upside down. These have a slim taper toward the bottom, but are fairly stable, don't leak and hold heat for several hours. I've heard good reports on the Yeti...

    Bamboo ?

There is a laminated bamboo product called, oddly enough, "Lamboo". It is dense, probably as dense as MDF. I have a 1 X 4 X 8' piece that I use as a straight edge. I don't know how much of the weight is due to resin injected into the bamboo. My experience with it has been restroom partitions and...

    Custom printed maps

I have been using Caltopo, but I have a wide carriage printer and a supply of 11 X 17" waterproof paper for it. With Caltopo, I download a .pdf of my maps and can print later. The subscription isn't that expensive and allows multiple sheets in one file. I generally try to stay with 1:24,000 and...

    Chuck Box anyone?

Have you looked at the Plano Sportsman's Trunks? http://www.planomolding.com/hunting/accessory-cases/sportsman-s-trunks There are three sizes, the two smaller ones being good for canoeing and storing of gear. Walmart carries them, but not always all of them. I have a couple of the small and...

Versatility of a tandems as a solo

When I started out paddling, I spent most of my time in the bow seat. It's only recently that I have started paddling solo or in the rear seat.

Versatility of a tandems as a solo

I have a different reason for turning the canoe around. My wife is too frail to paddle and is hydrophobic. The only safe way for me to paddle with her in the canoe is me solo backwards in the front seat and her in the rear seat.

    Pesty Carp

Buffalo, in my opinion, are uglier than carp. We used to see fish sandwiches at the summer festivals around here and they were buffalo. They weren't too bad if you could get enough onions on them.

    Adhesiveology

Eclectic products, the people who make Amazing Goop, make a wide range of adhesives based mostly on the same compound, Styrene Butadiene Copolymer. The main difference, as far as I can see, is viscosity. Their product range includes Shoe Goo, E6000 Adhesive and others. You can see their product...

    Question about Minnesota regulation

I have a certificate of origin for my NovaCraft Pal. Illinois only requires registration of motorized boats, my Jonboat needs a license for my trolling motor, but my canoe only needs a Water Usage Stamp. I do have to provide the HIN to get the stamp.
