    We are back

Hello again canoeing world! Thank Goodness. I can finally quit swearing at the Aholes that caused all of the problems. Looking forward to chatting with a whole lot of like-minded outdoors people . Yes, Paypal would be good. Cheers Ted

Please tell me about the Swift Raven

I love my Raven - it's saved my butt more than a few times. Yes, it doesn't like micro-eddies but it usually carries a load of around 270 pounds with lots of room left over.

Ted's solo trip on the Teslin River Yukon August 2013

Hi YC, i used Up North Adventures for shuttling to the put-ins and from the take-outs. I wanted that solo on all three trips and only wanted to spend one full day in Whitehorse between each river. A tad costly but the only way I could see to get it done the way that I wanted/needed to get it...

Ted's solo trip on the Teslin River Yukon August 2013

Hi Robin and thanks for the compliments. I don't have a place for more photos as yet but I'm working on it at the same time I'm building my Nisutlin trip. Cheers Ted

Ted's solo trip on the Teslin River Yukon August 2013

Thanks for the cudos. Really nice and appreciated. I wish I could say that the mileage was my doing but I just added a bit (average 3.5kph) to the Teslin current which can be anywhere from 3 to 7kph. On occasion short spurts up to 9kph - the river not me. :) I'd try to time lunches/breaks at...

Ted's solo trip on the Teslin River Yukon August 2013

I loved the trip and took a ridiculous number of photos. My trip report is really really long so, rather than overwhelm everyone, I have it up on my website for those who'd like to click over to it. Hope you enjoy and, warning, the webpage is photo heavy. As I was alone, I spent several days...

MRE ( Meals, Ready to Eat )

When canoeing up north this August, I was thinking about taking a few MREs for some "I'm-too-tired and want-food-now" scenarios. The airlines told me that MREs are a prohibited item and cannot even be shipped in checked luggage. So much for that idea - back to granola bars. Ted

La Verendrye Circuit 30 another not going far nor fast

Thanks YC. A good trip report and some great pics. You seem to be enjoying your camera. I haven't done those circuits for about 10 years now. I need to get back to LaV as I miss it. This year is shot but LaV is on my must-do list for next year. All the best, Ted

    MIL wants a boats

Oldie Moldy said: "I can't imagine how someone could opt for something that looks like it ought to be a suppository for an elephant." Thanks man - I just spit a mouthful of beer on my LCD monitor - I sure hope I can get the beer off and it was also a waste of Guinness. Some funny. I just really...

    Rethinking my ditch kit....

YellowCanoe, thanks for pointing out that Blizzardblanket. It looks like just the thing for my group emergency kit - perfect for a body burrito. It's available at MEC for $40.00 so I'll pick one up when I go replenish some of my new solo gear. I've had no failures when checking my PLB and...

    Header Picture submissions

I find the original lonesome photo rather sad and, like some others, would like to see it updated to something a little livelier. A photo with somebody using a canoe some way whether it be canoeing, portaging or lining. But, hey, its your site and no matter what changes you make, we all really...

Tripping: do it while you can.

Damm! I'm really sorry to hear that old friend. Any chance at all of a little LaV or La Mauricie trip? Don't need to be in a hurry. I'll do all the portaging, if any, which means that we definitely won't be in a hurry:) I know that you've always been strong, self sufficient and proud of that...

Worrying about heat while many wait on ice out.

I had big plans on getting a canoe out and in the water today. But right now we're in the middle of a 6 inch snow and ice pellet storm. It looks like I'll have to wait a while. So like Memaquay says argghhh!

    Two more wood canvas canoes

Nice find. My find was also "fixed up" with fiberglass at one point. It wasn't all that difficult to remove with a scraper and electric paint stripper to heat the resin up a little. It took about 5 hours. Getting the old resin out of the plank gaps was time consuming - I used a broken hack saw...

    Everglades Camping Tips and Tricks

Yellowcanoe, after that trip that we did a few years ago, I've always wanted to go back again but with a sea kayak. I just can't figure out how to get in and out of a kayak when tied up to a chickee - successfully and safely that is. Good tips, info and photos. Ted

    Canoe floatation??

When I practice with my 45 pound Shearwater, I go to one end of the upturned canoe, shove that end up in the air and give it a twist so that it lands right side up and empty of almost all water. Just make sure that your PFD is on nice and tight and yes, you'll shove your head a bit underwater...

    Alder Stream Packs

I was lucky enough to win an Alder Stream kitchen kaddy as a door-prize at the last Snow Walkers Rendezvous in Fairlee Vt. Form AND function. It's a real beaut just to look at and holds everything I need for winter trekking food utensils and a few spices to boot. Really well thought out - the...

    Coffee in the backcountry VIDEO

A great idea Wayne. Instant isn't coffee. I have my favorite home-ground coffee and would like to use it camping without the mess. I use tea balls for tea but never thought of using them for coffee. Got to try it. How rough is your coffee grind? Ted

Can I fix a cracked wooden gunwale?

Apparently it's the differences in contraction/expansion rates between the wood and the royalex in really cold weather that causes the cracks. I was told by a friend that he had to back off the wooden gunnel screws each winter to avoid stress cracks in the royalex at some screw points. FWIW, Ted
