    Trapper Nelson Indian pack boards

Bought this trapper nelson in the late 60s as it was the only real workhorse pack in northern B.C. We used to have contests to see who could carry the largest load. I never won but I did see a fellow carry a large cast-iron stove with one! I still use it on occasion just for old-times sake.

Some TLC for my favourite solo Shearwater

Thanks everyone. I guess that I shouldn't worry that my Shearwater is starting to look a lot like me now I'm 71. She's on the roof and heading out Friday. Can't wait for a 10 day French River trip this August, a few days in Algonquin Park this September and October.

Some TLC for my favourite solo Shearwater

After about 25 years of abuse from hidden rocks or a mad dash to a rocky shore thanks to some thunder/lightening, my very well travelled Shearwater is in need of some serious TLC. Keep gouges/scratches and 4 or 5 spider webs are starting to look dangerous. Any ideas on repair would be greatly...

    Rustoleum Top Side paint

OK then. What's a inexpensive paint to paint the entire hull of a 16' fiberglass canoe where I'll be lucky to get $500 bucks on resale? I already have to put new wood gunnels on so cost is important. (Trying to refurb and sell off this canoe for the next-door new widow.) thanks and hope this...

    Rustoleum Top Side paint

Colour me a tad confused here guys. Are you talking about the everyday standard 32 ounce cans of Rustoleum rust paint? The stuff you normally find in spray cans?

    Permethrin,

Every spring I put Permethrin on socks, bottom of my pants as well as the inside of my tent fly and around the entrance. I just use a 20 ounce spray bottle. One ounce of the farm store 10% and then fill with water. A perfect 0.5% Spray liberally then hang to dry. Keep all pets away from...

    Canoe Themed Beer

We have over 90 craft brewers in Ontario. As the "Beer Store" is owned by the big 2, true Ontario micros are not found there. You'll have to to the LCBO or some Loblaws stores to get a great range of good micro beers. I'm from Ontario and just for the record BLite is not a beer, it's one tiny...

    Did MEC dump paddle sports?

Not quite yet. They still have 483 paddling gear items up for sale including kayaks and canoes. Using their search, look for "paddling and watersports gear" Scully gear is no more apparently. They're finding it not cost effective to build much of their own stuff anymore. In many cases they're...

What do you do about bringing food into Canada?

FWIW, OTC Dramamine in the States is called Gravol in Canada. I go across the border 3 or 4 times a year for canoeing. My rules are no fresh fruit or meat or vegetables. So I've never had a problem or been searched. As well, the only knife that I carry is a single blade hunting knife - no double...

    New Administrator

Robin, you stepped up to the plate when this site was about to fold, worked your butt off getting it going again and turned it into the best canoe and canoe tripping site around. Many++ thanks good buddy. You're leaving this site in great shape after a lot of work that you should be really proud...

What's a "Tweet" anyway? I've always thought of it as a bird noise from an old cartoon that I used to watch.

    Portaging using paddles vs yokes

I just put 2 aluminum pop-rivets through the aluminum gunnel on either side of where the camp-on yoke fits to stop any kind of slippage. Makes me put the yoke in exactly the same spot every time. Painted black, nobody even sees them. For really shorts portages or to/from the truck, I use a 1.5"...

Homemade wall tent inspired by Robin

As DaveO said "Perhaps you would be willing to share the specifics of the cheap 3-way angle pipe fittings you sourced on Amazon." I'll second that, please and appreciated.

    Poll: How Old Are You?

Are we talking about physical or maturity age here. Growing old is mandatory but growing up is optional.

    Lows Lake Sept 27/28/29

Man, am I sorry that I had to turn back. My cardiologist said that it was a little too soon to get back tripping, but I never listen when there is something that I want to do. Mistake. My heart said no after the portage so I just spent the rest of the day meandering back to the truck. I was fine...

Ted = raingear. My neighbour keeps asking if he needs to water his lawn this week or am I going canoeing soon! I'm starting to get my feelings hurt. Yes, I sure hope that the winds stay down or it will take me 3 days to get where everyone else is camped. No big deal. Winds won't be fair...

    Lows Lake Sept 27/28/29

Since I'm not sure about dietary restrictions for anybody and not sure how many are showing up,I think it's best to just "do our own thing" when it comes to food. I was put on all sorts of dietary restrictions after my latest heart attack 6 months ago, so I have to eat my own crap anyway.
