    Habits Breaking Camp?

The last thing that I take from a campsite is a photograph. Usually from the water after loading and easing off the bank. Helps me to remember my stay, and also to identify the spot again from the water. I am rarely in designated sites, so returning to an excellent site simply from memory can...

    Be Careful Out There...

All of this is quite amusing to this Louisiana boy.

First day out with new boat and new canoe dog

Cypress swamps + Spanish moss + alligators = home waters for me. While we love paddling tandem, and is our norm, going solo in a swamp is my favorite way to clear my head and recharge. I find that my paddle strokes slow drastically to almost a scull, and often a full stop, to allow appreciation...

    Well I made one

While wood poles have been used for centuries, please take pause on the use of closet rods. A good strong, straight grain pole, is usually safe and trustworthy. Closet rods, however, are not typically hand picked straight grain. They are for hanging weight while supported along their length. End...

    Glad to be here

Welcome. I'm another "no portage, comfort tripper". Sounds like a great trip. Let us know how the gator glide works. Been thinking about it for my square stern, and the bottom of my duck hunting boat that I run a go-devil on. Did you use the G2 or the G4?

What's happening to the price of wood canoes?

And some of us can't seem to find any locally available, in any condition, at any price. Looks more and more like a major round trip 40+ hour road trip to even look at a decent WC. May have to see if one could be shipped down to Louisiana, but am afraid it would arrive as a crate of splinters...

    top quilt

I use down top and bottom quilts with my hammock. I can go to ground if needed, by using a Cabela's self inflating pad (from pre hammock days), and my top quilt. My hammock is a bridge with double layers, and found that the pad inserted between layers works great to flatten out the lay...

    Canada 150 canoe

Respect for heritage instilled through art is priceless. Kudos memaquay. Your efforts for your students will be long remembered through them, and then through the stories they will tell their offsprings. The world would be a much better place for all of us, if every student could be exposed to...

    Canoe mini-repair kit

Apparently you could cut a too heavy to portage canoe in half lengthways, and make 2 trips, each with a half on the portage, and then tape it back together with the Flextape. But when you paddle off in your now taped down the keel canoe, you have to yell "WhooHooo". Correction. Just saw the...

Bummer. Sounds like you've got a bad case of the porta potty blues.

Moose Bow Canoe ripped in 2

We have the occasional whitewater, associated not with falls, but with fails. Like when a levee fails. Rarely is the term "riffle" used in these situations. Can however create a hell of a rip current.

Giving in to modernity (way off topic)

While I love the overhead views of Google Earth, for planning, and my old handheld GPS, I cannot go on a trip without paper topo's. I was taught how to navigate with compass and topo's in '66, and I have complete confidence in them both. Most of the time, I am carrying both 7.5 and 15. Even when...

A proper looking repair. I need to look into the KeelEasy strips. Thanks

    Water, water everywhere ...

The back flushing is something I have gotten in the habit of whenever I filter. Typically I filter from my MSR 4L gravity system straight into a MSR dromedary bag. The MSR adapter on the product end of the filter tubing screws directly onto the bag. When the dromedary bag is full, I clamp off...

Snowy May Lows Lake Trip 2017

Sounded like some good conversations were shared being weather bound. Cold beer, campfire, cigars, and 2 brothers. Memories being made. Curious about your green cigar holder?

    Water, water everywhere ...

Excellent reminder. I almost never have any portaging, so bulk and weight rarely sways my decisions. I also forget that the great majority of those on this forum are the exact opposite, with portaging being the norm. It is a completely different decision making process, depending only, on what...

    Water, water everywhere ...

We use a MSR gravity system, with a 4L raw bag with the auto-stop valve for filter tubing. I like that style, due to not having the filter or tubing coming into contact with the raw water while filling. I can get back to camp, hang the bag, and then connect the filter. I filter into MSR...
