Silicone & Mineral Spirits Mix as Seam Sealer

You are more than welcome. Feels good to be able to contribute.

    Seam Seal, again in quantity?

Mike, I just remembered that Coleman fuel also works, which you may already have.

    Seam Seal, again in quantity?

Mike, I really think any solvent that will cut the silicone would work. It doesn't have to be mineral spirits. Just needs to dry or flash off, leaving the silicone. Haven't noticed any flexibility change in the silicone once the thinner agent had dried. I learned how to dilute silicone a long...

    Seam Seal, again in quantity?

You can make your own sealant for silnylon. Get a caulking tube (or 2 or 3) of good quality 100% silicone. Cut it with mineral spirits (I have also used lacquer thinner) until it is the consistence that you want or need for penetration. Use a clean glass jar to be able to visualize complete...

    Reflective Tarp Line, in quantity?

I have bought lots of various reflective lines, and without a doubt have no reservations in recommending Lawson Equipment. Lawson weaves everything in-house, and if you ever have any issue, either he or his wife will answer the phone or your email. I like the orange or lime for daytime...

    Relatively inexpensive flat tarp?

Mike, I have several of the Noah tarps. Two 12's and a 16. They are all from when Amazon runs them as a "lightning deal", and didn't give over $60 for any of them. For the money they are a great tarp. Plenty of perimeter loop tie outs, as well as various loop points scattered through the tarp...

Best donuts or best donuts on the Road

Southern Maid Donuts For those traveling along I-20 through or around the North Louisiana Shreveport area. Lots of locations. Best I have ever had. Operating continuously since 1937. If I even get close, at least a dozen. Hot in early morning, and then always hot after 4pm. Huge round neon...

    canoe paddle grip modifications

Wanted to thank gumpas for this thread, as well as all who gave advice regarding removing finishes and oiling grips. Tried it and really like the change to an oiled finish. Took one out for a short outing, and it didn't take long to realize that I will be removing the factory finish on the rest...

    Nova Craft Painter Eyes

Not sure how the layup strengthened those areas, but with a large enough backing plate, you should be good. Also the strength of the eyes will be a determinate. I would think for light lining or anchoring those eyes would not be stressed enough to fail.

Thanks Turtle. You just reminded me to get my scrapers back. Loaning tools out should come with overdue fines for non-return.

    Windy Conditions -- How Often?

Saw him live in Shreveport in 1968. Was glad I kept the ticket stub after he passed. Still have it. May be worth something to the Grandkids after I am gone. Hmmm, punishment by beer. I'm also an occasional double blade dipper. Where is this mythical beer line?

    canoe paddle grip modifications

What are you using to burnish? My experience in burnishing has primarily been gun stocks, and knife scales. I have in the past used heavy felt, denim, leather, a golf ball, and even a pair of well worn deerskin gloves. Always looking for better advise.

    Windy Conditions -- How Often?

There are days when even having sail furled makes sense. I love my sailboats, and many a weekend, there is no other option due to wind conditions. I don't sail on windless days, and when the wind gets over 20, I don't paddle. Not saying that the wind has not surprised and compromised many a...

    canoe paddle grip modifications

It appears that some of the learned have spoken. And I thank them for their perspective. Gum terp, BLO, and varnish, with a 2-3% addition of Japan dryer, has reworked quite a few gun stocks. Sometimes just BLO, and perseverance make for satisfying idle time in front of the tv, or a smoker...

    canoe paddle grip modifications

Thanks for the sanding tutorial. I did learn those lessons around 1959 or 60, doing pinewood derby cars. Lots of wooden boats (over 4,000 board feet of cypress) and gun stocks since then. And YES, Louisiana has lots of days for drying. Our ground level can also be in very close proximity to...

    canoe paddle grip modifications

All this talk about removing finishes, to enhance paddle feel in the hand, has me with sandpaper in hand. I have tung oil, mineral oil, linseed oil, teak oil, and some Watkins blended stuff in house. For the more learned; is there a preferred oil?

Big square stern Grumman for McCrea/Joel

I realize this is not geographically convenient for Mr. McCrea, but it sounded like the sort of Grumman that Mike had mentioned several times. Just an FYI. https://texoma.craigslist.org/boa/d/...519799294.html
