Be careful out there - crap happens

I own a drysuit, and I really doubt that I would have worn it on an outing like yours (not saying it would be a bad idea to, or that after I tipped I wouldn't be wishing I had!). Mine is a chore to get on, bulky, and I look goofy wearing it. I only use it for spring whitewater, where it is a...

    Inreach

I don't own one, but I like the inreach a lot. In my opinion being able to communicate back and fourth is incredibly valuable in an emergency situation. In my area a lot of wilderness search and rescue is done by canoe, and you do have to pick and choose the equipment you bring. Knowing the...

Strip Canoe Wood Alternatives (and Engineering Properties) an Essay?

I would have liked to have seen this. On remote trips, I try to not jump into my canoe from any higher than 12 feet. Quinn

    1 person tents

Rob, I bought a couple Hennessy Hammocks a few years back to use as rentals, and they never, ever, go out. You could certainly borrow one for a season, if you could figure out a good way to get a hold of it. I'd bring one up, but I don't think we'll be up your way until the fall.

    Carbon Fiber Nokomis

I'd make test pieces before deciding on a layup. A while ago I made 4 note card test pieces of 9 oz glass and Polyester. They were all vac bagged at once, so they had very similar resin content. From the outside in they where: g/g/p/p, g/p/g/p, p/g/g/p, and g/p/p/g. g/p/p/g was by far the...

    Carbon Fiber Nokomis

I might put the carbon somewhere else (but I'm also not an expert by any means). By putting it in the middle of your layup you'll get the least stiffness from it, and stiffness is often the main advantage of carbon. Carbon is pretty strong and stiff to go in the middle of a layup where it...

Boundary Waters Expo June 11-12th 2016

Robin, It would be great if you came to the expo. We're a little far west to be on the way for Marshall lake, would be a good stop on a trip to WCPP or Pickle Lake area. Let me know and I'll give you some very biased ideas on where to stay in the area. It is too bad that the two events have...

    GP build

I've pulled a composite boat of a male mold with with out cutting the ends. It popped of pretty easy for me, but it was a whitewater design with a lot of flare. You'll obviously get a stronger boat but laying up the ends with the rest of the boat. Are you going to put in a core or ribs after...

Boundary Waters Expo June 11-12th 2016

The dates are set for the 2016 Boundary Waters Expo. I had a great time at the inaugural event, and am hoping next years will be better yet. Once again we will have presentations, exhibitors and gear demos, on the shores of Seagull Lake on the Gunflint Trail. The website is...

    Carbon Fibre Straight Shaft Paddles

I've used a Mitchell Surreal for the last 7-8 years. It is starting to look a little rough, but is holding up fine. I try not to use it in whitewater, but have. I bring it and a beefier paddle for whitewater and general abuse. http://www.mitchellpaddles.com/paddles/ct/surreal.html

The Boundary Waters Expo, June 12-14 2015

With the Expo getting close, I thought I'd post a link to our speaker schedule. The event should feature good food, beer, campfires and lots of canoes! Speaker Schedule here: http://www.visitcookcounty.com/entry/BWCA-Expo_2_1/

    Souris River Quientco 17

When looking at a boat rented from an outfitter, it's always a good idea to remember that canoe companies often sell cosmetic seconds to outfitters. So, while most of the boats outfitters buy have no blemishes, every now and again you get one with a few flaws. A lot of people love the...

The Boundary Waters Expo, June 12-14 2015

The Boundary Waters Expo, June 12-14 2015

I'm glad to see this thread pop up again. As mentioned above, the closest camping is at Trails End, a short paddle or drive from the landing. For anyone looking for a cabin, there are lots of friendly resorts and outfitters nearby. The Shrimp Fry (and Bake Sale!) is an event that happens...

    Solo expedition build

I bet Charlie was using spray tack. Express Composites sells it, and it's purpose is holding dry cloth in place (usually for infusion). I've never used it, but it's my understanding it only works with poly or VE resin.

    FRP board material

Express Composites sells nomex and aramid honeycomb, as well as Plascore PP honeycomb. Honeycomb without a veil (like plascore has) is very limited in its use for hand layups. Plascore is great to work with. http://www.expresscomposites.com/

    Show me your canoe truck

Not the fastest, but great mileage! Otherwise, my 2001 Tacoma gets me where I need to go with only minimal fuss.

Solo tripping with a dog ...

If you enjoy solo tipping, I would recommend a Newfoundland. They will definitely enhance your tipping experience, and guaranty you'll be tipping more than you ever have before. Oh wait, TRIPPING. Never mind.

The Boundary Waters Expo, June 12-14 2015

Well darn Rob, if I'd have known you might have been in play I would have picked different dates. Maybe next year.

The Boundary Waters Expo, June 12-14 2015

Robin- I haven't talked to the WCHA, but we've been talking to Alex Comb of Stewart River Boatworks. We plan to have a lot opportunities for people to not only look at, but paddle, the boats in attendance. Christy- Hope to see you there! Get that passport renewed. Quinn
