    Build or buy?

Thanks Alan - this is very good to know (and potential justification for buying a thickness planer if I can find room in my garage for it).

    Build or buy?

Yup - strips don't build kayaks, people do. Got a quote from Totem before Christmas for about $1,300 for 3/16 bead and cove, including taxes and $300 shipping to Ottawa, for strips only not including any epoxy/glass etc. That was for 17 foot full length strips so probably a fair price...

    Build or buy?

That strikes me as a very good deal from what I have seen available in Canada for both cedar and epoxy/fibreglass prices. But Noah's only sells 1/4 inch strips I think, and I like 3/16. I wonder if it would be possible to plane down bead and coved 1/4 inch to 3/16 thickness without screwing up...

    Skin on frame canoe

That would be a very neat build, but mucho $$$$ I would think Stripperguy? Since following dogbrain's awesome decked canoe build I have been toying with a SOF variation, based on something called the Chuckanut, designed by Dave Gentry. Bought the plans, printed a 10% scaled down version to get...

    Skin on frame canoe

Very cool - I am just now cutting out the templates to put together a fuselage frame SOF kayak in my toasty warm basement (-27 Celsius in my garage last night so not much gonna happen on strip building there). Different beast than what you are building Bob, but always liked the idea of a SOF...

Tip out spurs quest for a new chair

Bought something called a Moon Lence camping chair last year from Amazon for $40 Canadian (roughly $30 US). It's a Helinox knock-off, rated for 330 pounds but I wouldn't push it quite that far. Weighs almost exactly the same as a Helinox Chair One (1.8 pounds, without the bag) and folds to fit...

    2020 Fund Raiser is On!

Decided to come into the 21st century and get a PayPal account. Fundraiser payment just sent to your email Doug. Many thanks Tony

    2020 Fund Raiser is On!

Doug, don't want to complicate things, but is there another way to send in electronically other than Paypal? I don't have or want a PayPal account and unlike when I use it to make payment to a business for a purchase, it won't let me send a one-time payment like this without one. How about an...

Algonquin in September- Trip Route Suggestions

Yeah, winter is no excuse, but glue, varnish and epoxy don't dry too well in an unheated garage. But if it's any consolation I am going to start a little skin on frame project in my nicely heated basement this week. Won't be as interesting or potentially useful as yours but should be fun and...

Algonquin in September- Trip Route Suggestions

Last time I was in Algonquin was for a two-day solo hike around the Eastern Pines Trail loop, in early June 2019. Not what you would call a deep backcountry hiking trail, but I did see a cow moose across from my campsite on Bucholtz Lake (centre of the attached crappily-taken photo) - she just...

    Decked Kruger Seawind style build

Just stating the obvious here, but that is one jaw-dropping build. Congratulations Mark

    cutting strips

Crap - I think that Dewalt is the same as the shiny new one I got for Christmas - model DWE575DC? As my only backup is a very old Black and Decker I will be trying the Dewalt out soon anyway, but Jim if it doesn't work out I may have to ask you talk to my wife to help me convince her to take it...

    Roy's Mystery Wood Canoe

You can get a ball park estimate of the number of required strips by measuring the distance of the widest station (usually the center station) around from the sheer strip location on either side, and dividing by .75 (for 3/4 wide strips) - e.g. if the distance around is 60 inches, then you will...

    Pack Capacity

For straight-up overnight hikes, my target weight for gear alone is a little over 25 pounds, including the weight of the pack, a hatchet, and a Helinox knock-off chair (which I too will never give up). For a week, I guess I would add maybe 15 pounds more for food (mostly dry stuff), maybe less...

    Decked Kruger Seawind style build

Dogbrain, that will be a very fine looking, well-constructed, and tough as nails boat - many thanks for the clear and detailed rundown of the build so far. I have pretty limited experience in strip-building, but I really like the idea of a decked canoe as I start pulling things together for...

    cutting strips

Dogbrain, grass is a distant memory here - thought about setting up in my backyard but not keen about the prospect of running extension cords across potentially wet snow. But I did find a dust hose adapter on Amazon to connect my skilsaw to a shop vac - reviews range from "better than nothing"...

    cutting strips

Will be giving the Skilsaw a whirl in a couple of weeks - the big draw for me is that I won't have to run 30 odd feet of in and out feed tables from the back of my garage halfway down my snow covered driveway. But I have to figure out the dust control part - I am sure there will be lots, as you...

Minimizing weight in my next build.

Yup - it’s pretty easy to get off track here and there, without appreciating the cumulative impact at the end of the day (at least for me). Ozarkpaddler1, if you decide to stay with a a strip build check out the canoe weight calculator at Ashes boats...

Minimizing weight in my next build.

Quite a few people here will give you better advice than I can on what to do to minimize weight for a strip built canoe. But having overshot my target weight on my last (and first) build by about 25 percent (what could have been a 30ish pound, 15 footer now looks likely to be 38 pounds or so), I...

    What are you reading?

Half way through "Beyond the Trees" by Adam Shoalts, an account of his 2017 trans-Arctic, solo canoe trip from Eagle Plains in Yukon to Baker Lake/ Hudsons Bay. Pretty good read so far - makes me wish I had 30 fewer years under my belt, and a heck of a lot more courage.
