    Tortured Ply canoe

Pretty sure I know what stripperguy is thinking - divinycell right?

    Tortured Ply canoe

Mike, it was a posting oops - accidentally hit “post” instead of saving a draft and since I couldn’t figure out how to delete it so I just edited it down. Ok, so on this build - Glenn and Gamma1214 and others make a good point, and I do like me some shadenfreude as much as the next guy. So here...

Materials, parts and pieces you keep on hand in the shop?

I would add a box of hot glue sticks and 3 or 4 packs of different sized staples.

    Tortured Ply canoe

Yeah, I came across this link a while ago and it does seem to result in a very nice canoe, although at the time I didn’t really give it much thought. But now, given the way this pandemic is going I‘m in need yet again of a dust-free, generally low-mess project to do in my basement over the...

    Bent Shaft Paddles

Not a new idea, but I‘m using epoxy saturated Kevlar cord to edge the paddles I am building now (balsa paddles under carbon fibre, so wanted the edges to be very well protected all around) - the edges are about 5/32. Got the cord on Amazon and thinner sizes are available if you are going down to...

    Tortured Ply canoe

Don’t suppose anyone here has actually tried this, or paddled one? https://www.songofthepaddle.co.uk/flyply-my-lockdown-torture-t58748.html

Putting a Quebec trip together; anyone have links to water temps?

Try here https://wateroffice.ec.gc.ca/station_metadata/station_index_e.html?type=stationName&stationLike=A All hydrometric data as far as I know - nothing on temperature, although given that this is in Northern Quebec I think you are safe to assume it will range from dang cold in the summer...

    Bent Shaft Paddles

That’s a really good weight for a wood and fibreglass paddle stripperguy. I am working on a straight shaft balsa core paddle that I plan on laminating with carbon sleeve and cloth. It’s 55 inches with a 7.75 x 21 or so beavertailish blade, and with most of the carving done it looks like it will...

    Open water canoe self rescue

Getting as much water out as possible is key, but if you are alone without someone to counterbalance on the other side you still have to somehow drag yourself in without flipping the whole thing over again - Alan does a great job in his video, but that requires a level of finesse that I am not...

Ashes Stillwater Boats (Tandem Ashes Quick)

I’ve built 2 Ashes canoes and 2 of his “prototype” SOF kayaks. I like his designs - clean and uncomplicated. I downloaded the Tandem Quick right away (since it was free), but have already bought several other of Trevor’s plans and my eye has long been on his Solo Quick. Probably not the most...

What tools and equipment are needed for a canoe building, repairing and outfitting workshop?

I’ve only ever done one-piece “uniwale“ gunwales (for 3 canoes so far). If you go that route you don’t need to spend a small fortune in clamps because a half dozen or so strips of duct tape will do the trick (but you will need a table saw or a solid router table to cut the groove)

    Alternative UV cured Resins?

That would be my advise too - wet down the area with a little water or rubbing alcohol and I bet that almost all of the discolouration will disappear. Once that is confirmed, dry it and apply a couple of very light coats of a clear varnish to the spot and it should be back to where only you will...

    Removing glued in pads... suggestions

I never would have thought this. I have a minicel seat that I will be attaching somehow to the bottom of a pack canoe and you probably just saved me a lot of grief. Thanks Mike. I hear you on contact cement, but what about 3M dual lock as an option to preserve removability?

    Removing glued in pads... suggestions

Not directly helpful for Stilwater‘s problem I know, but would dots of thickened epoxy/g-flex be a better option for attaching things like minicell? Would be easy to clean up a hand full of small epoxy bumps on the floor with a scraper and a bit of sanding if you have to rip out the old seat/pads.

    Carbon Fiber Nokomis

Yes, I can see that now in your top-down photo, but only because you pointed it out. I’ll watch for the same sort of thing on mine and be ready to deal with it in a similar way it if it comes up. Many thanks Tony.

    Carbon Fiber Nokomis

Just a great looking boat Jim. I am finishing up a much smaller 14 foot pack canoe now, strip build with a focus on light weight. Just curious - what were the indicators that you may have made your gunnels too light? I cut mine very light (3 pounds total, cherry one-piece), and would be helpful...

    Football area: Herring bone pattern

I am working on an Ashes Solo Pack right now, using the herringbone pattern. I did the centerline cut thing for my first canoe (Ashes Solo Day) but switched to herringbone on my second one (Freedom 17.9) to try something different, and find that I prefer it. The issue of gluing surface pointed...

    Alternatives for this site's future

I am not at all tech savvy enough to assess the viability of vBulletin versus other options, but the fact that I still can’t log in or efficiently browse the website on my iPad without some convoluted work-arounds speaks volumes. Your recommended option sounds like far and away the better choice...
