What's happening in your shop this winter?

I'm cleaning up my 2006 Yamaha Road Star 1700cc cruiser and selling it to both subsidize and make room for my increased appetite for canoeing. What is currently my motorcycle shed seems to be becoming my canoe shed. I'm down to one bike and it's got to go. For awhile this bike sated my...

    Question: Never Boat Alone

Indeed. I had the talk with the family today... "You know, I'm saving up to get myself a really nice solo canoe. But I don't have to do that. If you want to go canoeing with me, I can get two pretty decent big family canoes for the same money. And I can use one of them for my solo trips. Or I...

Color me peanut butter & jealous.

    Question: Never Boat Alone

As an autistic adult in a mostly autism-hostile world, there are precious few times and places where I can be myself without being chastised for it. "You can be yourself around me" is one of the greatest well-meaning lies most often told around people like me. "Why won't you look me in the...

    Old Town "Next"

Resurrecting an old thread as an actual owner of this boat... I'm happy to report that speculation about the relative discomfort of this seat is wholly unfounded. There are certainly some faults with this boat. The comfort of the seat is not one of them. This is a ridiculously comfortable...

    New Canoe in T-formex

Addendum: I've been watching a lot of YouTube videos, both from canoe owners and manufacturers, trying to get a sense of what's out there. The manufacturers of composite boats almost without fail show their products gliding around on still waters. Not so much as a ripple of wind on the surface...

    New Canoe in T-formex

As someone who's never owned or paddled a composite boat, I can say that the manufacturers have done little to dispel this notion. I'm saving up and looking around out there to get my first composite boat, and I've still got this idea that I'm going to be paddling around in an eggshell... that...

The canoe I'd never buy thread

"Honey, I know you told me to put that canoe on Craigslist but nobody seems to be buying it. I guess I'd better just keep paddling it until it sells."

I can imagine what the other side of that thing must look like.

    New Canoe in T-formex

Esquif has a delicate game to play here. Played correctly, they'll come out of bankruptcy with intellectual property rights that will assure future solvency. It'll be interesting to see whether they stay in the canoe business or not, or just move into manufacturing T-Formex. Putting my business...

boat advice: solo canoe for 1-2 week river trips?

    No way, not selling it.

    What are you reading?

I'll warn you, Dave: reading Brain Pickings will diminish your paddling budget while increasing your collection of books. This little corner of the Internet is for those who don't find entertainment in clickbait, celebrity gossip, or memes. This is where curious people go to find fresh fuel for...

boat advice: solo canoe for 1-2 week river trips?

Indeed. I've been really itchy to get it down to NC from my parents' garage in PA. My parents are in that age of early retirement where they spend a little time at home and a lot of time on the road in their RV. The soonest I can get my hands on it is May 2017. I really feel like if I can get my...

    What are you reading?

I really loved Moby Dick so this one has been sitting on my to-read pile. I have to get my nose out of business leadership books long enough to spend some more time with some good fiction. My to-read pile is more like an antilibrary. :)

boat advice: solo canoe for 1-2 week river trips?

It's unusually dense for its small stature, yes. Not yet, but I intend to this week as I'll be writing something up about this boat for my blog (which probably won't be published until I get out with it some more). I'll share the weight here, though, as soon as I weigh it in. Old Town Pack...

boat advice: solo canoe for 1-2 week river trips?

The forum shrunk down my satellite image... but yes. The area around the pond has large clear areas as well as wooded areas.

boat advice: solo canoe for 1-2 week river trips?

My plan is to bring a tent. It'll probably take me 9+ hours to get up there.

Trips planned for 2017 What is everyone planning

Though I've been paddling off & on for years, I'm a noob. 2017 is about building my fundamental skills, gear, and confidence. So I expect a bunch of 1-2 night trips around NC. I'm kind of winging it. When it seems like I should be out there longer, I'll go on longer trips.
