What's happening in your shop this winter?

Late July is the dead of Winter somewhere, right? Otto the Schnauzer & Mrs Magnus are exhausted from our ~100F heat. We were in and out of the shop cutting down & drilling out the replacement seats for the OT Camper. We're expecting thunderstorms every day for the next week or more, so there...

Global distribution of lakes, where most lakes can be found...

In gross figures, yeah, Canada is looking great. By % of country's surface area, have a look at the Nordic region, especially Finland. Scotland is also looking promising.

    Adirondack Gathering October 6,7,8 & 9th- 2017

Hmmm... On one hand, this is really far from Raleigh. On the other, it's only an hour from Placid Boatworks...

Old Town Next among touring kayaks... on the Neuse River

The purple thing showing up in the photos is a mylar balloon. This was among the garbage I harvested from the river banks. Garbage which the kayakers had no choice but to ignore. Advantage: canoe.

Old Town Next among touring kayaks... on the Neuse River

I took a "mental health" day from the craziness of work yesterday to "go to church" so to speak... my religion being paddling, and my denomination being seventh day canoeist. The local parish I visited is the Neuse River, which flows through Raleigh. This wasn't a trip so much as a rec paddle. A...

    Thwart bag suggestions?

I ended up getting a good deal on the Granite Gear large thwart bag and the under-seat bag. I skipped the portage pack for now. The trick: sign up for an account, add the stuff to your cart, and go away. After some hours go by, you'll get an email offering free shipping if you buy the stuff in...

    Editing time for posts

I've been alternating between Tapatalk and the web interface. It's been really useful when I'm away from my computer, so I'm very grateful to have it. I also like the Like button and have been using that, as well.

Another new guy looking for advice on first quality canoe

Thinking more about what you're doing, though... if you want to pack out a deer, and other more experienced people may disagree with me, I wonder if your interests would be better served by either a longer solo boat or a 15-16' tandem.

Another new guy looking for advice on first quality canoe

I've had the Next since Dec 2016. I am 6'2" and about 240 pounds. Most of my paddling is in flat water and slow moving water. I was able to pick it up for a little over $900 out the door. It's a short boat at about 13 feet which makes it nice when I'm back in dense areas like blackwater...

Another new guy looking for advice on first quality canoe

First... welcome! Second... what is it you're hunting? If you get a wee pack boat, packing out a deer might be a bit much extra mass to haul out combined with paddler, gun, and gear. This will be compounded with a kayak, by the way.

    Old Town "Next"

I've had this boat a little while now and thought it worth an update. Especially since this thread comes up high in some search results. My kids like it. They don't like canoes. They don't like single bladed paddling. But they love kayaking. And they love their dogs. The Next is a game changer...

3rd party hosting photo site suggestions?

Flickr is free. There is a pro service, yes. But few have real need of it. You can get everything you're after there for free.

    surefire pike catching tactics

Reminds me of one Summer afternoon many years ago in Pennsylvania. I had a trout on my line, and a big bass came and ripped it right off the hook. This is a more ambitious fish than my bass foe, though.

First day out with new boat and new canoe dog

Interesting turn of events in the household... Wife + 2 of the kids prefer kayaks after having tried a few different types of boats out. I'll respect their choice... The oldest kid (pictured in the OT Next) really loves being able to paddle with her dog. EVERYBODY wants lighter boats. Dad...

First day out with new boat and new canoe dog

Last week I picked up a late 1980's Old Town Camper 16 in Royalex layup. My mother had bought it new for my father way back. He'd used it 2 or 3 times and left it in the garage. So I took the wife & kids out for a recreational paddle today. Wife & I were in the OT Camper with my puppy, Otto...

Taking the wife on her first trip

I'm a bit envious of those of you who share this with their wives. Two out of three of my kids decided they like double bladed paddling and not single bladed. Going to try them out on a double blade canoe tomorrow and see how they like that. One of them will be excited, I think, by the sight...
