Ventured onto the Saco today. Never saw a soul. Best time of year but not peak.

Should you have to pay the costs of a rescue?

I can see that in an urban situation but I doubt too many people in a back country emergency would say "no thanks, I might get charged".

Should you have to pay the costs of a rescue?

InReach offers a similar service. Seems Mountain Rescue in the French Alps is free in summer, but you pay in winter. At present it appears the NH Nat'l Guard is planning to station a Blackhawk at the Berlin, NH airport to assist with serious rescues in the north country. They can winch a patient...

Should you have to pay the costs of a rescue?

I, too, was surprised about yknpdlr's statistics. It has been the exact opposite in my area. The number of serious incidents are probably up slightly, but the number of calls for non-debilitating injuries has increased dramatically. People inexperienced in outdoor activities are assuming the 911...

Should you have to pay the costs of a rescue?

Some of the new tech gear such as InReach etc. that allows text msgs. has been a big help in not calling out the cavalry just because someone is behind schedule or has a non-debilitating injury.

Should you have to pay the costs of a rescue?

New Hampshire law is aimed at people who are grossly negligent. When a rescue is initiated it puts in jeopardy all the rescuers involved. Here in the mountains it also takes about 18 rescuers per mile to bring out an injured person by litter. It should also be noted that in Maine and New...

Touch up painting a wood/Dacron Loon Works

My all around favorite is Kirby. Unless you are a builder, I think the amount purchased isn't worth not buying top grades. If well sealed, with minimum air space, they will keep a long time. If we're talking about a canoe like the OP has, they aren't going to be stored outside.

Slotted gunnels/gunwales in a solo - yeah or nay?

I have paddled wood canvas canoes for better than 30 years, and presently own 13. I have never done anything to the slots. As long as the canoe isn't stored on the ground you won't have any problem. However, solid gunnels could possibly contribute to deck problems due to poor drainage as...

Touch up painting a wood/Dacron Loon Works

Nothing wrong with Rustoleum. In fact, it's about the only oil base paint left short of paying big bucks for "marine" paint.

Slotted gunnels/gunwales in a solo - yeah or nay?

Can be handy for securing gear in the canoe also. Not sure what you mean by "treating" a couple times a year.

The History of Blue (originally green) Barrels

I've only recently been trying out the barrel method. Like the ease of opening/closing while remaining relatively waterproof, and it really excels in a campsite that is overrun with rodents etc. however... when it's full, it's full. No sneaking additional items under a flap, and I cringe every...

I think it's time to say hello, finally

My words exactly. I'm thinking your English may be a bit too good to pass as one of us.

    Lobster Lake 9/19/21 to 9/21/21

Spent three days on Lobster Lake this last week. Surprised at the number of vehicles at the put in both on arrival and when leaving. Some may have been on the river as the lake was quiet. Shallow Bay and the beach sites were occupied when we got there Sun. as was Ogden South, but the other sites...

    Campsite Evaluations

Spent two days windbound on Pillsbury Is. Eagle Lake. Hoped to camp at Smith Brook but it was occupied. Fortunately had a book to read. Not in favour of sandy sites. Next to impossible to keep the sand out of tents, bedding, and food.

    Reflector Oven

Too many campsites have fire rings that look like cairns for above treeline travel and are pretty much useless for cooking in, neve rmind using a reflector.
