    packing out garbage

Planning a trip to BWCA next summer. Obviously, I'll be packing out my garbage. Question is, If I just put it in a plastic bag while I'm there, wont bears still smell it? Especially wrappers from meat. I'd think bears would smell that kind of stuff.

    The Incredible Righteousness of lightness

I feel the need for lightweight canoes is overrated. I can understand places like BWCA you'd want a light canoe. But otherwise weight shouldn't be an issue.

    BWCA permits

Waterdog, How early in the year can one go without a permit? I think its Oct. 1st when you can self register. I'd think the first couple weeks of october would be a nice time to go. No bugs, no permit required, not too hot, and usually not rainy.

I've gone to the BWCA permit website and either everything for next year is filled-up or its too early to register. Anyone have any info on getting a permit?

    Wind. It really blows.

Saw a lot of tents get wrecked by the wind in the high altitude mountains. I bought a North Face tent designed for high wind. A good investment.

    OTC & royalex

With Royalex gone, I see canoe manufacturers listing Royalex canoes 'While Supplies Last', and making replacement models with a different material. Old Town, however, says nothing about Royalex being a thing of the past, and still offering Royalex models. Does Old Town own a million sheets of...

    my canoe is getting beat-up

Actually, I took a piece of 6 x 6 foam 3/4" thick and layed it on the hull directly under the yoke. Then propped a 2x4 between the foam and yoke. This did the trick. I cut the 2x4 short enough as to not put too much pressure on the hull.

    my canoe is getting beat-up

I just bought a new OT Discovery 158 last spring. I have a few minor scratches in it, no big deal. But whats worse is my seat (they are plastic) is getting bends in it ( I only weigh 180 lbs) and starting to split. Also, the canoe is oil-canning. I know most plastic canoes do oil-can, but it...

    Teen drowns in Minnesota

Sunday was a perfectly calm day. Hard to imagine a kayak or canoe capsizing in calm water (tho i know it can happen). I do know that on some lakes here in Minnesota, boaters have been know to harasse kayakers/canoes by running circles around them to cause waves. So who knows..........

    Teen drowns in Minnesota

This is from news article today: A teenager has died in a kayaking accident on a Douglas County lake. Sheriff's deputies say the mother of the 15-year-old boy called authorities from Wild Ridge Campground near Alexandria Sunday shortly before 5 p.m. after her son failed to return...

How much does your gear weigh

Has anyone actually exceeded the max load of a canoe? My canoe is rated at 1150 lbs. I cant image that much stuff even fitting in there.

Please help me make my first canoe decision!!!

Pretty much any canoe you choose will be an improvement over that Coleman (except Pelican & Sun Dolphin). I used to have a Coleman 17' and paddled it everywhere, even took it to the BWCA. It did a great job. But, when I finally upgraded to an Old Town Discovery 158, I noticed I can paddle...

    building permit for canoe storage?

I took a look at the city ordinances. It states 'Any structure of any size of any material needs a building permit.' I also says that even if the structure or container is freestanding, and un-attached to anything else, you still need a building permit. Placing landscaping blocks, even a single...

    building permit for canoe storage?

I had propped up a couple 2x4's and draped a tarp over to cover my canoe. The city sent me a letter saying I need a building permit and that I need to tear it down, apply for a permit, and if accepted, I can then 're-build'. WTF????

    Swamps (what if?)

Im sure most of you fellow canoeist enjoy the scenery and solitude of swamps. I've posted about tipping a canoe over and got many good tips on what to do. Today, as I was paddling across a very large swamp, I started to wonder about tipping over as a gust of wind almost blew me out of control...
