    What are you reading?

Just finished "Losing The Head Of Phillip K. Dick"...I was pleasantly surprised. I thought it was going to be a farce, but it is a serious look at the development of AI and robotics between 1995 and 2005.

Reflectix Cozies (and Nashua FlexFix foil tape)

I have cozies for my 10 and 12 cm IMUSA pots. I also made one for Mountain House meals for a 2014 WCPP trip. My buddy liked it so much I gave it to him when he dropped me off at home. I just buy those windshield shades and cut the pieces I need. As it turns out, the cozy for the 12cm pot is big...

In need of 30" inseam rain pants

Just a suggestion...buy some good rain pants that may be a bit long and then use gaiters...not the most elegant solution, but seeing as you bushwhack a lot, the gaiters may be useful in more than rainy situations.

    This trip...together...

It was getting on toward dusk now. So I paddled a few km to the end of the lake and camped at the beginning of a portage. After a nice hot meal I had a small fire and finally climbed in the tent and fell fast asleep.

What is in your solo kitchen kit?

    This trip...together...

Deciding that discretion is the better part of valor, I lined the rapid. Back in the boat I found myself in the prettiest little pool you could ever want to see. The water here was flat and calm. I could see a beaver dam about a km ahead. I paddled to the dam and pulled over it.

    Bow line advice needed

You will be fine splicing a loop at each end of a 25' blue line. Up north I think the regs require a 25' floating painter at each end. You Canadians can backstop me on that...

    Gear that annoys you

I had squeaky shoes on one trip years ago. They drove me nuts! I dropped them in the trash can at the take-out parking lot. AHHHHH, that felt good!

    Counting Strainers

I call those "pull-overs." In the north woods these are most often beaver dams, but in a river, those trees are pull overs to me. Now when the boat is on the bottom of the shallows I call it it a drag. In both senses of the word! A carry, or portage, means I empty the boat, pick it up, and...

    Quetico or BWCA?

My first thought was the same as Marten. Atikaki has some primo paddling and you can't beat the price! Also, you would get a lot more time on the water for the same amount of time off work.

    Too much gear?

I use lists and check if an item was used last time. Of course, fire, shelter, water, food, knife, first aid, navigation are essentials. Things like a hatchet/ax, fishing gear, chair, extra tarp, small ccf pad, etc. almost always go with. I also try to keep gear weight to 30 lbs or less...

Drive Up Access to Wabakimi PP

Hmmm...aprox. 40 mi from the bridge to Whiteclay. But only a couple portages. Could be done in 2-3 days...Is the dam portage river right or left?

Drive Up Access to Wabakimi PP

2 more questions about Ogoki River/Dam access: 1. Where would one park a vehicle? 2. Is there a portage around the dam?

Drive Up Access to Wabakimi PP

Wab Proj maps are the most comprehensive maps for canoe routes in the Wabakimi region. They have detailed info on campsites and portages. NOTE: There are more campsites than shown on WP maps because the WP maps show only campsites big enough to accommodate two tents. One could use only the WP...

Drive Up Access to Wabakimi PP

I have been looking at that on Google Maps for a couple years. Is that FN land up there? Do you need to get permission from the local FN officials? Mattice Lake has an outpost there, too. I suppose they could answer questions about the area.

Drive Up Access to Wabakimi PP

Highndry posted about the entry north of Smye: The second entry north of Smey that Ken referenced is at 50.483276, -90.249081 according to the Canadian Topo map at mappingsupport. Ken and I discussed this entry and his intel was that you can turn right onto that bumpy, obscured logging road for...

    Blown away

Nothing more than a hat or two. I have seen a canoe airborne but still tied to a tree at one end. That was scary!

Be careful out there - crap happens

Wow! If just one or two things had gone more awry there would have been a lot of "But he was such an experienced paddler!" or "How could he not have known?!?" Good to hear you got out of a jam in good shape.

Drive Up Access to Wabakimi PP

I started a thread like this on another board, but sibnce there are a lot of members here with Canadian paddling experience I am also posting here. Maybe you folks know some spots of which I am unaware... Here are a few options for drive up access to Wabakimi. These entry points are on Crown...
