The top places you have ever paddled

My favorite places are in the boreal forested area of Ontario and Manitoba. I have spent over a year of camping nights in Woodland Caribou Provincial Park in NW Ontario but with the recent fires those special places are not to my liking. Fortunately the last few years I have been exploring...

Which trip report format do you prefer?

Being able to use someone's GPS FILE of seldom used portages is a big plus for me. It also gets rid of all the false starts where that old map shows portages long since relocated to better routes.

Woodland Caribou Provincial Park is Closed due to fires

Very sad to see the whole park going up like this. No rain in sight either and these fires are even burning into each other. The map link is the best to really track the fire. Select layers in the upper right drop-down list...

    Canoe length and charter flights

When we fly with two canoes on an Otter the pilot does have a preference of which side the longer one goes on. The last time we got dropped off the pilot and helper then strapped a Lund Boat to the struts for the trip back. I think the pilot had asked the outpost cabin owner for permission to...

Let’s talk modern manufactured canoe length double blades

I have used 240 to 290 in different canoes but know now that I like the Camano 260 the best. Others have used it and then bought one. My main transport is a Wenonah Prism but have used it in Wenonah Encounter tripping too. Bow and stern in tandems of different makes and worked well.for me. I am...

    Weather radios and tripping

In Manitoba's Atikaki Park we found our travel plans being dictated by advancing forest fires and wind direction. With good forecasts we knew where not to head. AND our pilot was only a text away!

    Upper Bloodvein Solo

I have spent a lot of time in Woodland Caribou and agree with Alan Gage on those big lakes of the upper Bloodvein. Actually the Bloodvein from Artery and west is getting so much use that Manitoba has taken notice. So much paddling in those areas without spending it all on the Gammon or Bloodvein...

Very sad - Another fatal bear attack

This spring I had a Black Bear at my remote northern Minnesota cabin. I did not try pepper spray but twice fired a 12 gauge shotgun over its head. Each time it was back in 5 minutes. The third time I was yelling at it but it stopped and turned and looked at me from 15 meters. It would be dark in...

    Old Wenonah Catalog 1981

I have a New Cruiser 18.5 in my basement. I took out the front seat and used it solo for 30 days in WCPP once. I would trim it on calm days so I could sit in the stern seat. In rough water I could step forward and kneel behind the center thwart I put in for portaging. 33 pounds and 18.5 was...

Portage clearing in the Greenstone Region

Great work their men. When it comes to chainsaw brands just remember the bigger names usually have three grades of chainsaws: homeowner, rancher and pro. Homeowner saws can't handle a long portage and a pro saw is built to work long and hard.
