    NorthWind blowing in Fl...

its a bit hideous, but ok for a first try at a rain/dew cover and should work as intended. As Mike pointed out reading instructions, blogs and vlogs only goes so far. At some point you have to pinch your nose and jump... The way I approached this was to invert the fabric and lash it under the...

    The start of a paddle

looking good. Making a paddle from scratch is on my list too.

    Wooden Plugs Over Screws????

agree in this context its not very practical to cover the screws, but my guess the notion to plug the holes was probably a carry over from cabinet and furniture making. Plus, what alsg said, builder may have planned to always be the guy fixing and would know what he did anyway. Unless of course...

First time build - Freedom 17

    NorthWind blowing in Fl...

Thanks Mike that was very helpful, I'm like you and your boy tho, will end up getting after it and learning from mistakes. I snipped off a few scrap pieces from my material (its the 200D not 70D as I thought) and did some folding and ironing. Very easy, very strong. I can see a lot of...

    NorthWind blowing in Fl...

thanks mike and good info as always. I'm still pondering the deck stuff. My instincts after years of noodling around swamps and coastal mangrove estuaries is to minimize snagglee's as much as possible. With this canoe and especially for coastal jaunts I don't want anything on the decks. If I...

    Nothing Fancy

looking great. Should be ready for the trip. Just aesthetics, but I think I might have been tempted to put a little camber in those decks, but with the plumb stems and straight sheer I guess 90 degrees works with everything else line wise. My son is the same with big projects, starts out on...

Jim, quite a few pearls of wisdom in this thread :) beautiful work too

    NorthWind blowing in Fl...

SG, lamination schedule evolved a bit, but main objective was scratch and puncture protection followed by indestructibility. :) What I ended up with was 2 layers of 4oz s-glass on the deck. Initially thought 1 4oz layer would be enough, but was too flimsy for my liking to survive inside...

    NorthWind blowing in Fl...

still bumbling along on this thing and figured I'd check in. It was in the water a couple weeks ago to find center of buoyancy and test various seat positions and heights. Paddles great, very well mannered when seated about 12"-15" aft of COB point, even without the rudder. Rudder control...

    One Fugly Canoe Seat

I would just go with the bleeding hearts, makes for a good story and fixing them wouldn't help the overall vibe much anyway. I'm wondering is that a baked potato the frame is propped on in the first pic? :)

    Fixing Up the Bell Mystic

heck of project. Hard to believe someone could beat it up so bad. By buddy has a see through merlin he wants to bring over so I can help him repair some small kludgy patch work from the previous owner. Nothing like what you're up against. Anyway, those things sure are pretty until they need fixin'.

Square Sterns for Hunting and Fishing.

"Many days of travel in a Grumman just like that.....with jacklift too!" Vern thats my buddies ride. He lives in N. Pole AK, gets a l lot of use out of it up there. Mem, I'm tempted to build one like that for tooling around in the everglades and some of the more expansive estuaries we have...

    Birds in your boat?

happens a lot around these parts, I rarely bother taking pics, but this female grackle stayed with us so long I had to get a few pic's. I think the behavior is an extension of them associating people with food on land. So they see people on the water they figure there is an easy snack awaiting...

    More Boat Work

Mike you should start a youtube channel to document and share your projects. Always find something interesting whether I thought I would or not going in. :)

    Finishing Ash gunnels???

only canoe in the stable with ash gunwales is my hemlock peregrine, Dave recommend teak oil. I use Watco same as Jim. That said I agree epoxy with UV protection would be tougher, but overkill for my needs. Something about the satin natural oil finish and touch that I like too though.
