    Rock Climbing

we followed the Kuskulana Glacier to its headwall. We turned back at 13,500 not having enough food left to continue. Two big crevasse fields ate up a couple days. I think someone climbed it from the south, but south on that mountain is pretty wide. We had planned for a bush plane to drop food on...

Help me choose a new camera?

I don't know what you'll think of the low light capabilities. Here's a list of why I like i 1 it is similar to my previous camera, the one i drowned. That one lasted 10 years. 2 I find canon menus to be logical - stuff appears in the right order, where I expect to find it. Exposure and iso and...

Help me choose a new camera?

I used a Canon SX30HS for about 10 years before violating my rule - camera goes in the waterproof box before entering or exiting the canoe. I replaced it with a used SX50HS for about $200. My first box was a Pelican, but broke the latches after a year because I was putting the camera in and...

    Rock Climbing

I started climbing in 1975. No gyms, and pretty much anyone that was worth tying on to was, to some point, self-taught. It kept the numbers down for sure. Mostly, you either figure out how to do it right, or you scared yourself and quit. I liked alpine climbing best. The mix of rock, ice...

Obvious safety violation: Say something or keep quiet?

I'm 0 for 15+ on telling people not to do stupid stuff in boats. But, I have a small perfect score on rescues. Like Alan said, tell them there's a ranger nearby handing out expensive tickets. Dumb people just don't know that they're dumb.

First solo canoe and solo safety

I did a lot of solo paddling in a Penobscot 16. i assume that you already figured out to paddle it backwards from the bow seat. I always carried a 5 gallon plastic bucket. put that up front with a few gallons of water and a Penobscot will sit down nice and handle pretty good in the wind. I...

Do I really need a drysuit, or will a two peice do fine?

I really like my drysuit and I don't mind wearing it all day. I have a Kokatat Expedition. About my paddling - I canoe alone, year around as long as the ice permits ie as long as the ice won't prevent me from getting back to shore. Tidal and fresh water in CT. No whitewater. Lots and lots of day...

    Poll: Socks and Sandals?

Sure, Keens are closed toe, but they are also sandals. Nothing is as much fun as a zebra mussel or a sharp stick in the side of the foot. I also hate the way that sandals suck gravel in.

    Poll: Socks and Sandals?

No sandals when canoeing. Closed toed footwear only.

It doesn't matter whether they are open or closed for short duration. But, do use your zipper wax, often, and keep the zipper clean

    Canoe paddle collectors

Here's a few that I carved. I've made just south of a hundred. The designs feature a lot of maps, or motifs that get at the spirit of canoeing or environmental issues. I make a point of using new paddles before turning them loose (I use them in art installations) as they are just carved wood...

    Ants

I've done 2 bike tours in Iceland although it was almost 25 years ago. The airport is, by far, the ugliest place in Iceland. As you go away from Keflavik, it just keeps getting more and more beautiful, especially if one gets off of the ring road and explores other areas. And now we're off topic...

So, what old item do you still use?

I have a Lifa polypro turtleneck that I've been using since about 1980. I've washed it a few times though.
