Odd, funny, scary or beautiful things seen on a portage

On a BWCA portage one year with my canoe on my shoulders I came face to face with a mother moose and her calf. We both stopped and looked at each other, I moved to one side and she moved to the other side and walked past me. I'm guessing having the canoe up helped me look larger than I...

Solo or small tandem (to fit the dog)

I've found that I like a smaller size tandem to use with my 70# pup, has more room for the pup and my gear and seems easier to balance out everything than a solo was. Currently my go to is a 14.5' Merrimack Traveler that was/is a hybrid test model that came in at 39#.

    Unfulfilled Tripping Dreams?

I think that would be the best part of the river to do!

    Unfulfilled Tripping Dreams?

I've never been an expedition type of tripper, my longest trip was 10 nights out. As a Minnesota boy I've become a BWCA fanatic to the tune of 4 or 5 trips a year most years. I've paddled, hiked, skied or snowshoed during every calendar month of the year. I enjoy various types of trips (solo...

    Litter, garbage and trash

I was pleasantly surprised on my 3 trips to the BWCA this summer and found almost no trash on portages or at campsites, a complete reversal to what it was during the pandemic.

The best solo canoe may be a touring kayak.

For me the biggest downside, and it is a deal breaker, is sitting. I need my options to sit or kneel or stretch out my legs or fold them under me. I can last about an hour in a kayak. Portaging is a deal breaker too. The boundary waters CANOE area is one of the last places where you hardly...

    Seasonal withdrawal

Just saw that the water in the BWCA is still soft and probably going to be that way for another 10 days or so, I think I will postpone my withdrawal and head up there next week as a warm front appears to be moving in.

Surprising effects of fire in North America's boreal forests

Not always true, in the BWCA the last couple of big fires have created jack pine forests that look like they are a nursery,

    Panther to Snowtrekker Winter Tent

Ellis canvas tents out of CO. uses the same "lightweight" canvas as snowtrekker but I find their pole setup simpler and easier to use than snowtrekker.

How do you manage your camera while canoeing?

I bought an Olympus TG6, it's waterproof to 50' and the strap will keep it afloat if I drop it in. I have played with a couple of underwater shots too and I'm going to be trying more of those.

What do you drink on a trip?

Coffee and lake water, occasionally I'll filter it and once in awhile I put some flavoring it. I also tend to put a couple of frozen bottles of gatorade and 1 small bottle of frozen milk in the bottom of my bear barrel. After a couple of days I have a nice cold drink and I have 1 breakfast of...

Poll: How often do your canoe trips include fishing?

I love fishing out of a canoe vs any other way. If I'm paddling I usually am trolling.
