    Making a Seat

Thanks for your time Jim. I appreciate you measuring that. I'm thinking about the Raven. Not dead set on it yet, but one thing for certain, which ever I build better be under 35" wide or my seat won't fit. Buying the cart before the horse. Got my walnut and cherry strips cut. The walnut I cut...

    Making a Seat

That would be awesome Jim. Thank you. Is your seat lower in the front then the back? Just curious on your thoughts of a cantered seat like Brian mentioned. It sounds like it may be easier on my knees. Roy

    Making a Seat

Thanks Brian. I'm wanting to build the Raven by John Winters. The max width states 32.25". I haven't ordered the plans yet, but I think the 22" curve should be good, and leave at least 5" on each side for hanging and adjusting. So the front of the seat being dropped an inch more then the back is...

    Making a Seat

I am building a seat for a canoe I'm getting ready to start building. I'm thinking about building the Raven. I want a solo canoe and this design has been highly spoken of. I've cut out a rough idea on a scrap piece. Is the seat area to large? I figured 22" wide with a 2" drop. Just getting my...

Question about Sanding Too Much on One Side of Stern

Ya I'm curious also. I've built one canoe, and I feel lucky that it turned out as good as it did, as far as I know. When I was fairing the hull it dawned on me that I had no idea how much wood I was shaving off. I couldn't think of a way to even measure that. You are creating a piece of art...

    Good day

Good morning Mercedes, and welcome. I was just strolling thru the posts before getting out of work, and saw yours. Welcome. Lots of good people on here, and some from Florida also. Roy

Question about Sanding Too Much on One Side of Stern

Oh wow. I would try to even it out a bit, somehow. How thin are you with the strips on that side? Can you see light thru the wood grains? Roy

This time of year, working on canoes but thinking of past trips,

Robin, was that the canoe you shortened from 18 to 16 foot? I too enjoy your videos. Thank you

    Knee Pain

I've cut back on my snacking and trying to get a little more exercise. I have figured out that the safety shoes I have been wearing at work, have been causing a lot of knee pain issues. I've bought a few expensive safety shoes for work, and the first few days they feel great. After a week or so...

    Raven, part 2

That is beautiful. How do you get in there to trim the inside of the stems down, or do they stay mostly proud?

Yet another reason canoes are better than kayaks and SUPs

My wife and I were paddling up a creek and we ran into some fallen trees, so we decided to turn back instead of carrying around, and it was getting late, and hot, so we headed back to the launch site. A little ways back we conversed with a young couple in recreational kayaks. The guy was fishing...

    Knee Pain

Thanks for your alls input and advice, you could've responded like my wife, " loose some weight fatso". Ha just kidding she wouldn't say that. I think I'll raise my seats and try that. The small Mohawk and even the wabnaki I made, pains my knees after awhile. I seldom kneel unless encountering...

    Knee Pain

Does anyone have knee pain when sitting in a canoe? It usually takes about an hour before I start to get uncomfortable. I'll switch between kneeling and sitting, and have to move my legs every 10 minutes or so. I'm pushing late 50,s and work on a factory floor, a little over weight, so I'm not...

Hanging or storing a canoe off floor in a garage with vehicles

The buckles are about 7 feet up. I'm an average 5'10", maybe a little chunky but the wife doesn't complain, yet. The Subaru and the 06 Colorado I have are under 6 feet tall. I do forget that lots of people drive taller vehicles, so a taller vehicle would be a problem.

W/C project boat in northern MA

I'd love to do something like that, but I'm not experienced enough and a 13 hour drive one way is a deal buster. Roy

Hanging or storing a canoe off floor in a garage with vehicles

Whoa those canoes are nice! I've changed my hanging system for my canoes. I got away from the rope and pulley thing I had, it was more trouble then it was worth. I now use a simple cam buckle strap. Simple to lift each end at a time and pull strap end. 8 foot ceiling and plenty of room to walk...

Trailers: Tips for Backing Up, Driving, Maintaining?

Naw, they only do that in Kentucky. Were a little smarter breed here in TN. Here in these parts you would have to play Johnny Cash and the Carter family. Yeh them little trailers are hard to back up. Roy

Trailers: Tips for Backing Up, Driving, Maintaining?

Oh, a receiver hitch would be better. That way you can remove the ball, so you don't look like some ole southern hillbilly driving around with a hitch sticking out the front of you van. 😂 Roy

Trailers: Tips for Backing Up, Driving, Maintaining?

You could install a hitch on the front bumper. I've heard of people doing that because they drop our lakes so far down in the off seasons, it's a long way down some ramps, and it would be easier to see your trailer. Just a thought. Roy
