My quest for the best custom made ottertail paddle in the world

Looking forward to the future videos. It is hard to find good info on the Northwoods stroke.

    Not quite the BWCA

First time I have been able to log on to this site in months... Stayed on Frear lake in July of 2017. Was actually fairly full and got bussed by some drunk people in motor boats on Elbow Lake. The fishing was not good for us either, but we saw our first moose. She came out of the bush at 8 or so...

    Thwarts & Seat placement opinions

My 16' 9" Bell Northstar and 18' 6" Northwind both have thwarts behind the bow. The only one that doesn't is my B16 prospector, as Glenn mentioned so you can paddle solo from the bow seat backwards. That is one beautiful canoe!

    May BWCA Trip

Left 6:15 am Monday morning and arrived at Entry Point 19 Stuart River around 11. Had to cut the trip from 7 to 4 days for personal reasons, but had 4 glorious days. The first 480 rod portage is a rough one and we were glad to be paddling after that. The River was higher than last year, and...

    10 day solo outfitting

Amen! I don't have any more problem in a head wind with a properly balanced small tandem than anyone I have been with in solo canoes. In fact, I was the only one to stay dry on several trips because their bow was so much lower than mine.

Let’s talk modern manufactured canoe length double blades

I use a 260 cm Accent Air paddle in my Morningstar solo. I chose the longer length so I could keep the stroke low and not get wet. It has worked out pretty well. I prefer a single blade, but there are times when the wind and waves require it, and I'm glad to have it.

    Look what I found!

I would be afraid to use a heat gun on Royalex, but a hair dryer should do the trick. Just go slow and try and get in one peel so you don't have to deal with to much of the adhesive underneath.

Discontinued canoe you wish was made again?

I would love to have a Bell Morningstar in Blacklite or carbon fiber/innegra as Dave mentioned. Greatest solo tripping boat ever made! Alas mine is only in kevlar.

    Backwards Prospector Expectations

I would venture to say it had something to do with the average size of Americans at the turn of the 20th century. A tall man for the time at 6 foot only weighed on average 170 pounds. He would easily fit in the stern seat and have plenty of leg room.

    Those dang dams

    I do the same.

(Another) help me find a new solo canoe

From my personal experience with IXP and watching what Ted Baird does to his Nova Craft in innegra, I can assure you it is very tough. You won't just get a hole in it, you would have to be going full speed and hit a pointed piece of granite at just the right angle, even then I don't think you...

WTB: Snowpeak Ti-Double Stacking Mug H600

Absolutely love my H450, but my Evernew alcohol cook set won't fit it in it. If anyone has a Snowpeak Ti-Double Stacking Mug H600 they would sell or trade please let me know.

    New to me canoes!

Great score! Never heard of the Whisper. Looked it up and it looks like a rocket. Should be fun to paddle.

    Canoe trailer

Here she is with the 18 inch hitch extension. Turned her as sharp as it would go and still had a foot and a half of clearance. She rides really nice with the weight of the three canoes.

Jim, Even with the fenders, the bottom racks are to low? Is it from the towing vehicle?

    Rethinking Firearms

As long as you are trained and proficient with it I highly recommend it. I carry my 10mm when I trip. God made all men, Samuel Colt made them equal.

    Canoe trailer

Thank you for all the responses and especially the photos. I apologize for not replying sooner, I have been working 12's trying to get ready for upcoming BWCA trip. I would like to extend the tong, but it will have to wait. I found a hitch extension that will push it back 18 inches. Never...
