    Vacuum Sealing Mylar Bags

I've been using alternate brand pouches and rolls for a couple years now. Good performance and noticeable reduction in cost. Off the top of my head; OutOfAir, ShieldNSeal, Angel Love. I do quite a bit of food sealing and prefer the rolls.

    Carbon / Kevlar BLACK Pearl

Interesting, Jim. The flotation chambers are the last thing I have yet to decide upon for my spring build. They will probably be the more traditional vertical inserts with a deck plate but I'm still entertaining alternatives like your tear drop versions.

Utility thwart/platform in bow of tandem

I've made a new thwart since that conversation. Wasn't happy with my original bungee pattern and I added a small "dashboard"with a velcro panel to attach a little hand-held style fish finder. I also narrowed the boat shortening the gunnel width by 1.5". Took out what little rocker it had as a...

    Nice job there!

Utility thwart/platform in bow of tandem

Nice work, Mike. I have a wide front thwart on my Old Town Pack rigged for fishing; rod holder mount, fish finder, anchor rope cam cleat, bungees for hand tools. With fore and aft soft bag anchors the little Pack makes for a nicely appointed fishing boat.

    Seat Woes

I'm not gonna tell ya about the time I was drilling out a composite tandem to install a bow tug-eye and punched the first hole... in the stern :o Its nice to have an attachment at both ends but I had only the bits for one tug-eye on hand. Had to wait for a new order to arrive before finally got...

    Internal or External Skid Plates?

I did some Dynel plates on a friend's drift boat this past summer and they seem to be holding up quite well. That boat sees a lot of contact. I've always liked working with 4 oz S cloth and I just made a set of skids for another friend's canoe using a double layer of that material. Not enough...

    Motor use and Nylocks/nuts

I've gone away from the nylon lockers as they seem to have trouble with the big temperature swings in my region. I can paddle a canoe in cold weather that had them tightened properly during the summer and find them loose when I return. Loctite is a good thread locker but I've switched to...

    Materials for River Trips

I'm impressed considering the conditions the boat has been run in. Add some dynel skids and she's ready to go again.

Yellowstone, Shoshone Lake, Lewis River quesiton

Heart Lake is sweet. If memory serves, it was the first area to have established back country camp sites. I worked on them as a youngster many decades ago with the scouting program. I've hiked into it from the Yellowstone lake back country a couple times over the years. If you're into natural...

Bear Hang using a 3:1 pulley system

That was a terrible thing. My condolences to you and the husband & father of the ladies lost.

Throwing line over a tree limb, and a recent revelation

I prescribe to practices similar to those that Odyssey describes. If I do cook unprocessed food over a small fire I take care to work upwind of its smoke drift. This usually occurs on the first night out of a longer trip or if I'm adding caught fish to my lunch or dinner menu. I'm a bit OCD...

Wood Harvesting Tools - Saws, Axes and Knives

That BK-9 is indeed an excellent wood processing knife. Its a nice balance of weight for chopping and splitting but still works rather well in the hand for smaller chores. My belt knife is an Ontario Blackbird. I love that knife but its a fairly thin 5" stainless blade better suited for other...

Wood Harvesting Tools - Saws, Axes and Knives

I always go with a Silky and a small forest axe. I like fires and fire-making. Use the tools a lot.

New Spring Clamps for Stripping !!!

Very nice, Jim. This reminds me that I need to snag a couple tubes from the garage and make up a set of 2 inchers for my spring build. Good winter project.

    Bivy Sacks

I don't do well with extreme confinement. Tried a friend's bivy many years ago and thought I was gonna die. Even an ultralight one man backpack tent gives me the willies. Mummy bags? Nope. Perhaps I'm mildly claustrophobic, I don't know. Just can't do ceilings and such right over my face. For...

Any interest in a group paddle in the Tetons?

If you want a nice 3 day trip, Leigh lake (Tetons) has nice backcountry camp sites available. If you want a nice peaceful 5 day trip, Shoshone lake is a great choice. You have to pull your boat a mile up the river channel but that keeps out the riffraff. If you want an excellent 7-10 day...

    What's in your campfire?

Move the rocks, start a new chapter in their story. They were bored anyway ;)
