Best Sleeping Pad for Side Sleepers and Comfort on the Trail?

For canoe tripping I use a Therm-a-rest Mondo King 3D. I absolutely love that pad and can't wait to climb into the tent most nights. If I am trying to save weight I have an older Therm-a-rest Neoair Trekker that is pretty good. I do certainly prefer the self inflating foam pads over the air...

Shirts for canoeing and canoe camping

The original bug shirt + the original bug shirt company pants. During bug season I live in them and they treat me good. The rest of the season I am usually in a Fjallraven Abisko sun hoodie, or a white Columbia Omni shade button up shirt.

    Trade Wars to Affect Tripping?

I haven't heard even a whisper of that. Ontario parks does seem kind of hell bent on raising rates but mostly they seem to be going after solo paddlers.

    R. M. Patterson, canoeing author

I discovered Dangerous River back in 2016 I think and I got completely hooked. I was lucky and TouchWood was printing Trail to the Interior, the Buffalo Head, Finlay's River, Far Pastures and Those Earlier Hills and I was able to scoop them all up. Last year I found new copies of the Nahanni...

    Pants with knee pads

I'm an electrician who is up and down off his knees all day and I've been wearing the Helly Hansen work wear pants for about a year now. Love the knee pad pockets, and I wish I had these 20 years ago when I started!

    Winter pants

100 to 320 weight Merino Long Johns, 3/4 Length Fleece Pants or joggers (they end mid calf at my boot) and then unlined knock off goretex ski bibs overalls on the outside. I have a couple different weights of Fleece Pants and Long Johns I will mix and match based on the activities and...

    Pillows

I tried a bunch of inflatable pillows and stuff sacks filled with clothes but nothing was ever that great. I don't snore normally but I would constantly wake myself up snoring on anything I tried. Then about 4 years ago I got a Nemo Fillo and it's perfect for me. Wouldn't leave home without it.

What height boots do you prefer?

For shoulder season I usually wear the 10" LL Bean Maine Hunting Shoes or Hunter Tall rain boots (15"?). Ten inches I find is just enough to let me step out of the canoe onto shore without leaving any paint on the rocks. The rubber in both boots stays very soft around the freezing point. If it's...

    Peeing in one’s canoeing shorts

I had a similar situation with a canoe partner. We had limited good water access on our second night out and just after we made camp he decides you take a leak into the lake right where we are fetching our drinking water from. I informed him this was very poor form and that I would appreciate if...

    Peeing in one’s canoeing shorts

I was told while I was shopping for a second hand wetsuit years ago there are only two types of people. People who pee in their wetsuit and people who lie about peeing in their wetsuit.
