    Thus build the Raven, evermore

Thanks to stripperguy, I was able to make and install the bulkheads. I have not done the final glassing because I'm running low on epoxy and didn't want to get them 1/2 wet out and run out. I used a fillet of thickened epoxy inside and out of the more vertical piece. Before I glued the top...

    Thus build the Raven, evermore

While working on the raven today I noticed that the top of the shear is canted outward considerably. For the time being I've added long pipe clamps to the gunwales to twist them inward. I may be able to reduce this canting when I square up the inwales. They are currently thicker at the bottom...

Thanks for the link to your images stripperguy! Those images tell me a great story of how you built and installed the bulkheads! I had chance to make templates for my bulkheads today after fiddling with the position of the spruce gunwales. I had some scrap cedar from my aborted canvas...

    Thus build the Raven, evermore

I steamed the wood for the front of the seat, cleaned up 'glassed portions at the shear and started fitting the gunwales.

Stripperguy, I've looked at your kite a number of times. It's awesome, and that pedestal is cool. I might try that another time. This time I've decided to make a conk style seat hung from the gunwales. I'm also interested in your floatation in the bow and stern. How do you think the weight...

    Thus build the Raven, evermore

I finished cleaning up the inside of the hull and glassed. Man does it a long time to wet out all of the area.

    Thus build the Raven, evermore

I got the knuckle epoxied on the left side and then after dinner added the thickened epoxy on the either side of the inner stem. I used the puking mouse method but still used my spoon to smooth the peel ply. The best practice, is practice. I figured out that you need to cut a really small...

That's very helpful Mem. So you were able to get good trim just by adjusting your load? I just looked at the lines drawings. It looks like the front of the seat is even less than 6 inches from the center (station 8).

True statement alsg. Adjusting height is easier by changing wood.

So another question for the gang: hang the seat from the gunwales or epoxy brackets on the hull? I do plan on some sort of adjustability for trim. I was planning on mounting rails from the gunwales but now am thinking the seat might shift (wiggle) side to side

Thanks for the excellent descriptions for the pukng mouse (pastry bag method. The one thing I was missing on previous attempts was putting the bag inside a clean cup for the transfer. I'll give it a try when I do the fillets along the inner stems and on the left side of the canoe. I may end up...

Alan, do you mix your epoxy in a cup first with the thickener and then put the glop in a baggie? I tried that a couple of times in the past but made such a mess I felt like the tar baby from braer rabbit;). Also, do you have to smooth after applying the epoxy from the baggie?

    Thus build the Raven, evermore

I'm about 1/2 way done sanding the inside of the hull. Working at it only about an hour at a time had made it less soul ripping;). I set up a really really fancy jig to hold the canoe up at an angle to apply the thickened epoxy. I used making tape to reduce over applying the epoxy which...

    Thus build the Raven, evermore

I pulled the peel ply before heading to school. I was a little concerned that this could run my whole day but it t turned out some better than I expected. There are some places where I'll have to sand a lot. But the edges of the football are totally buried in epoxy now. the we've had...

    Thus build the Raven, evermore

Mark, those images are great! I have masked off areas in the past when flashing rub strips and other things in the past. I probably got the idea from watching Nick Shade as well. This build seems to be about how quickly I can build. Although in the end, the rushing will probably take more time...

    Thus build the Raven, evermore

I used a space heater under the hull with the raka epoxy warming on the strongback over night since it seemed considerably thicker than the system 3 I have used in the past. I decided (wrongly) to put the football layer on top of the full layer of 6 oz. Glass. I ended up with little strings...

Can you find the scabbed strip now? I was able to shape the knuckle pretty well mostly using my 5" ROS. To get it ready for the fillet. I'm using raka epoxy with the slow no blush hardener. The resin seems much thicker than the system 3 I've used in the past although my basement is cool...

    Thus build the Raven, evermore

A lot of work this weekend! I ended up doing much of my fairing with a makita 3x18 belt sander with a 40 grit belt. While doing this I noticed a few spots where the strips separated and sprung a little. I used tape and a 6 foot piece of quarter round flexed to hold both strips flush. I also...

    Thus build the Raven, evermore

Oh man Iskweo, now I have to figure out how I'm going to time in to build that in between filling gaps in the strips in hull with thickened epoxy (before I sand). That's such a great dust collecting design! I'll probably use it to have my kids vacuum the garage floor when I'm done;) I'm only...
