    Lower Yellowstone river

Day 3, final day. Up early packed up our wet gear, coffee for breakfast and back on the river by 9. The weather was the best of our trip, and our spirits were greatly lifted by the sun and light wind. I’ve never seen so many pelicans, as I did on this trip. Also saw numerous bald eagles...

    Lower Yellowstone river

Day 2. Woke up to a beautiful morning, which would change soon. Had breakfast, packed up camp and was on the water at 10:30. By the time we had loaded up and launched, the clouds rolled in, and the wind picked up. We battled strong headwinds, and 1 to 2 foot rollers all day long. It was...

    Lower Yellowstone river

Just finished up a three day two night trip on the Yellowstone River. Three of us launched from the Intake diversion dam. Myself in my home built cedar strip solo canoe, and two of my friends in an old aluminum Lund that we refer to as the Tank. Paddlefish season opener in Montana was on...

Thanks! It was a great trip, short but sweet. No black flies to speak of when I was there. Very few mosquitoes.

BWCA Bear Proof Food Storage Rules Change

I’m in Ely right now, and just spent a small fortune on an Ursack and Opsack liners, and I’m okay with it. My first time in the Minnesota north woods, and my first trip to the BWCA starts in the morning. So excited, I may not sleep tonight.

    Springbar Compact

Getting ready for canoe season. Set up my new Springbar Compact in the backyard. Going to spend the night, see how it goes. Supposed to get down to 37 degrees tonight, so fairly warm outside. Sitting inside right now with a Coleman lantern going and it’s toasty.

Everything around here is still froze up, so decided to take a short drive north for my canoes maiden voyage. Boundary Dam Reservoir by Estevan, Saskatchewan stays ice free year round, as a power plant uses water from the reservoir, and then pumps warm water back into the reservoir. Well, I...

Lewis and Clark dugout canoe display

Thought I’d share a photo of a display of a dugout canoe being built. This is a model on display at the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center at Washburn ND. Pretty cool little museum, and I thought this display was pretty neat.

Cabin fever here waiting for winter to end. I’ve had my canoe hanging from the ceiling since I finished it. I hadn’t weighed it since varnish, so took it down and weighed it. 37.7 lbs. Ice out in April feels like a long time away.

    BWCA Permits

I’m a BWCA virgin. Got on the Recreation.gov website right at 9 am Wednesday, and got my first choice. Not sure if it was luck, or my choice of entry point and date. But I’m very excited to go. Permit is for EP 54 on Seagull lake on September 15th.

Thanks Alan! Yes I had plenty of frustrations along the way, but got through the challenges by taking a step back, looking to this site for answer. Oh the dog lol, she has that thing on, to prevent her from licking a sore.
