    Overhead Rack Replacement

My roof rack system needs to be replaced. It’s a 79” round bar Yakima system. Very noisy and there is corrosion and a couple minor cracks in some of the towers. I’m considering a Thule system with a wedge (more squarish) aluminum bar. Anyone used this system and know its durability...

New Issue with my Swift portage yoke

Well, I had ordered 2 inserts and paid double their cost in shipping, so I didn’t completely escape unscathed. Swift recommended I ship the boat back to them so they could “rip out” the inserts and repair the gunnels, replace the inserts. Combined with the difficulty involved with just...

New Issue with my Swift portage yoke

Simple fix to re-expand the wings of the insert. No ripping, tearing, Gflexing. She’s tight as before. Keeping that contraption unmounted ‘less she’s being carried. Top wrench keeps bolt still. Tighten bottom nut wrench 1/4 turn.

New Issue with my Swift portage yoke

Spoke to swift. Ordered a couple replacements. They just rip them out then repair the gunwales. I’m thinking about a deep hole saw or a thin hack saw blade to get under the flange. Not sure drilling them out would work. They might spin, and I’d give up the threads to use for upward pressure.

New Issue with my Swift portage yoke

Can’t it just be drilled out and replaced?

New Issue with my Swift portage yoke

i got this boat 2nd hand. Still learning. It definitely has idiosyncrasies. Had to get Swift to issue a new hull number so I could register it in OH. Dumb requirement to register hand powered craft. Anyways, Swift’s old numbering system won’t comply with many state standards. No i gotta...

New Issue with my Swift portage yoke

That doesn’t look promising. I was hoping it was threaded or just ribbed. I bet it’s epoxied as well as the wings. The gunwales won’t hold my clamp on detachable yoke. This sucks.

New Issue with my Swift portage yoke

I hauled my canoe to Wisconsin with the portage yoke attached, bolted into the threaded insets on the gunwales. Short story is the yoke was loose the insets are loose in the carbon aramid gunwales. Now I need to remove the loose inset anchors and reset them better. Anyone done this? Pic is...

    Hatchet or Saw?

Anyone ever whacked sticks on a rock? For campfires, much wood can be broke down quickly that way. Just pine, however. Worked good out west where rocks stick up all over. One whack and it’s broke, ready to burn. Called it making wood.

    Hatchet or Saw?

Low angle, absolutely! Basic training with edged tools starts young. I carried a hatchet as a youngster, made some mistakes, learned from them. Certain strokes will generate glancing blows. Keeping body parts clear of the strike zone, away from any glances are key. I’d venture to say that...

    Hatchet or Saw?

    On a camping trip?

    Hatchet or Saw?

I’m conflicted. Hatchet is hard to beat for driving stakes and splitting small stuff, but the weight puts it in the liability category.

    Gflex on Gelcoat?

I’ve got some gouges and deep scrapes I’d like to touch up. Would thick Gflex be good on Gelcoat or should I find another product?

How is Shadow getting along in his new home?

My youngest daughter got a white cat when she was 4, which she promptly named “Color.” We thought of it as hugely creative, artistic; she was destined to be an artist. 😂

    No Bears Yet

The cabin next door is owned by some people from the twin cities. They killed a yearling bear a couple years ago because he tore into some garbage they had on their porch. They drove off with the carcass in their ATV presumably to bury it. Since, the wildlife have precipitously declined around...

    No Bears Yet

Bogan and I took the riverside trail. A few gobblers talking, but no bear sign yet. Maybe a couple weeks and the mommas and babies will be out and about. Wolves seem to have disappeared around here, but I did find a bunch of feathers that signaled the demise of a gobbler. Looks like he...

    Spider Cracks

Would hand sanding the spider crack before applying thin gelcoat layer be advisable or not?

    First paddle of 2025

Gotta take advantage of these early season gems. Bogan agrees. When he sees the canoe go up, he becomes a velcro dingo.

    Must have medical items?

I would reconsider my wound stapler if not for my hatchet, maybe.
